Job Overview
The Underwriter is a strategic professional who stays abreast of developments within their field and contributes to directional strategy by considering their application in their job and the business. Recognized as a technical authority within their area of the business, the Underwriter provides advice and counsel related to technology or operations, guides, influences, and convinces colleagues and external customers, and has significant impact through complex deliverables. An Underwriter in Natural Resources within Corporate Developed Markets covers large and complex relationships in the United Kingdom and Western Europe, responsible for all underwriting activities in partnership with Banking & International and Risk. The Underwriter will be responsible for Power, Energy, Chemicals & CET sector clients.
Responsibilities
- Assist bankers and underwriters in underwriting requests for credit extensions for new and existing clients, and in writing annual reviews with a focus on complex and higher dollar exposure transactions.
- Perform detailed financial analysis on companies, including trend and ratio analysis, and interpret financial information.
- Perform collateral analysis on accounts receivable, inventory, machinery, equipment, and real estate to evaluate collateral performance and changes in trends, and assess repayment capacity using secondary sources.
- Prepare monthly and/or quarterly reviews of existing borrowers to track compliance with loan covenants as outlined in the loan agreement.
- Build a solid understanding of Citibank products and services within Commercial Banking and the broader organization.
- Coordinate with bankers on customer calls and site visits when appropriate.
- Perform industry and geographical research and other due diligence as needed.
- Familiarize with Citibank credit policies and regulatory policies to assist the unit in achieving compliance and satisfactory ratings from auditors.
- Provide training for less experienced credit officers and credit center staff in application processing, credit analysis, and loan closing roles.
- Provide backup to the team manager in workflow distribution and monitoring as needed.
- Recommend process changes to achieve greater efficiency.
- Appropriately assess risk in business decisions, demonstrating consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets by ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, adhering to policy, applying sound ethical judgment, and escalating, managing, and reporting control issues with transparency.
Qualifications
- Extensive relevant work experience in a similar role.
- Preferred Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; prior experience in a financial institution or loan officer or underwriting role (credit training a plus).
- Advanced analytical skills and the ability to read and assess company financial statements, cash flow, industry and competitive analysis, and projections.
- Demonstrated knowledge of intermediate accounting theory and its practical application in the credit underwriting process.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Problem recognition and resolution skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and within a team.
- Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing applications (Excel and Word preferred), including the use of graphs and charts and Moody’s financial analysis software.
Education
- Bachelor’s/University degree; Master’s degree preferred.
