BMS & Operational Technology Systems Engineer – London Based
JLL is seeking an experienced BMS & Operational Technology (OT) Systems Engineer to support the reliability, performance, resilience and secure operation of building management and control systems across a critical London portfolio. 65
The role is principally focused on BMS / industrial controls engineering delivery—including BMS servers, supervisory software, integration gateways, controllers, field networks and OT connectivity.
In addition, the role will provide resilience and security assurance, ensuring OT/BMS systems are managed in a controlled, standardised and risk‑aware manner in line with client operational resilience expectations.
This position works closely with operational engineering teams, IT/network teams, BMS service providers and client stakeholders to deliver stable, secure and auditable building controls operations.
What this job involves
As a BMS & OT Systems Engineer (Resilience & Security) you will take technical ownership of the OT/BMS estate within a multi‑site critical portfolio.
You will provide hands‑on engineering support, manage specialist vendor delivery, and embed structured controls for secure access, patch governance and recoverability while maintaining operational uptime.
This is not a pure cyber role. It is a controls engineering role with embedded resilience and cyber‑ aware ness responsibilities.
- Key Accountabilities
- Operational Technology Operations & Engineering
- Act as engineering lead for the day‑to‑day health and integrity of BMS/OT platforms across the portfolio.
- Support BMS fault diagnosis, performance optimisation and strategy improvements across plant and systems.
- Lead lifecycle engineering activities including software upgrades, controller refresh, server/workstation replacement and platform migrations.
- Support commissioning, testing, tuning and validation of control strategies, alarms, trends and system performance.
- Own engineering standards and technical quality for BMS works delivered by vendors/subcontractors.
- Ensure systems remain safe, reliable and performant in a live operational environment.
- OT/BMS Network & Integration
- Support and maintain OT/BMS connectivity including switches, segmentation, topology and OT integration pathways.
- Work with IT and network teams to ensure OT/BMS systems are integrated using approved patterns (segmentation, boundary control, remote connectivity).
• Maintain accurate OT documentation including
- Network diagrams/topology
- Panel/controller drawings and schematics
- OT asset registers and configuration records
- Support integration of OT‑connected assets (e. g., meters, UPS/generators, chillers, lighting controls and specialist systems).
- Resilienc e, cyber & security
- Embed practical and maintainable security controls into OT engineering practice, including:
- patch/update coordination for BMS servers, gateways and OT workstations
- hardening / secure configuration of OT assets (where supported)
- account and access management for BMS platforms and engineering tools
- backup, restore and recovery assurance for supervisory systems
- Ensure remote vendor access follows agreed approval processes and technical safeguards (secure pathways, traceability, timed access where possible).
- Support vulnerability management activities by assessing findings, advising practical remediation and coordinating execution during maintenance windows.
- Participate in resilience testing and assurance activities relating to the OT/BMS estate (e. g., recovery testing, operational risk reviews and audit readiness checks).
- Provide practical guidance to site teams and vendors to reduce operational risk while sustaining uptime.
- Governance, Change Control & Standards
- Enforce structured OT change control including technical review, testing approach, rollback planning and evidence capture.
- Ensure vendor works comply with required technical governance including method statements, access approvals, commissioning records and as‑built documentation.
- Maintain configuration control and system baselines (versions, controller backups, databases, golden builds).
- Provide reporting inputs to client stakeholders relating to OT system performance, risk issues and improvement delivery.
- Stakeholder & Vendor Management

- Review and approve BMS vendor technical proposals, designs and implementation plans.

- Required Qualifications
Education
- Apprenticeship, HNC/HND, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in:
- Building Services Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation or similar.
Essentials Skills & Experience
- Strong hands‑on background in BMS / industrial controls engineering (multi‑site operational estate preferred).
- Proven ability to diagnose, commission and optimise BMS systems in live operational environments.
- Working knowledge of OT communications and integration protocols (e. g., BACnet, Modbus, OPC, Lon Works or equivalents).
- Experience managing BMS/OT servers, databases, backups and platform lifecycle.
- Strong understanding of OT engineering governance: documentation, change control, evidence‑based commissioning.
- Comfortable working in critical environments where uptime, safety and service continuity are key priorities.
Desirable Skills & Certifications
- Vendor platform training/certifications desirable (Trend / Siemens / Schneider / Honeywell / Tridium Niagara).
- Awareness of OT security principles such as segmentation, access control, remote connectivity controls, patch governance and recoverability.
- Familiarity with relevant guidance/frameworks (IEC 62443, NIST, CIS) is advantageous but not essential.
- OT/cyber awareness certification (e. g., IEC 62443 fundamentals, GIAC GICSP) desirable but not required .
