We have a fantastic opportunity for a highly organised and detail-driven ICA Engineering professional to join our close-knit, dynamic team at N-Gen. You’ll act as the ICA technical authority on a new hydrogen production, compression, storage and fuelling facility, shaping automation philosophies and safe systems of work across instrumentation, PLC/SCADA, ESD and F&G, and LV control circuits to deliver safe, reliable and efficient operations. If powering future ready hydrogen operations excites you, we’d love to hear from you today.

Key responsibilities:

  • Specify and govern instrumentation for hydrogen service, including pressure, flow, gas detection and metering.
  • Lead control system design reviews for PLC, RTU, SCADA, HMI and industrial network architectures.
  • Integrate functional safety, supporting SIS and F&G design, trip logic and proof‑testing regimes.
  • Deliver hazardous area compliance for ICA equipment to IEC/BS EN 60079 and manage Ex inspection regimes.
  • Ensure LV control systems, panels and ICA circuits meet BS 7671 and EAWR requirements.
  • Apply DSEAR principles to minimise ignition risks and ensure control system integrity during gas releases.
  • Develop RCM‑based maintenance strategies for instruments, control panels, Ex apparatus and automation systems.
  • Build and manage ICA asset hierarchies, criticalities, PM routines, condition monitoring and spares.
  • Drive reliability through RCA, trend analysis, nuisance trip reduction and automation system improvements.
  • Manage ICA authorisations and audit competency under agreed Authorising Engineer frameworks.
  • Enforce cybersecurity standards for PLC/SCADA — access control, patching, configuration and segmentation.
  • Oversee commissioning: loop checks, FAT/SAT, I/O testing, logic validation and Ex inspections.
  • Produce and review ICA designs, including drawings, loop diagrams, narratives, cause‑and‑effect and system architecture.
  • Control configuration changes to PLC logic, SCADA graphics, setpoints and firmware under formal MOC.
  • Support ICA planning, capex/opex forecasting and long‑term investment decisions.

Knowledge & technical know-how:

  • EAWR 1989 and HSG85 safe working practices; BS 7671 (18th Edition) LV control circuits and verification/testing.
  • DSEAR and IEC/BS EN 60079 for Ex equipment/cabling, installation and inspection; ISO/TR 15916 hydrogen hazards.
  • PLC/SCADA/RTU architectures, industrial networks and cybersecurity principles; COMAH safety instrumentation and alarm management.
  • Interfaces with ISO 22734 (electrolysers) and ISO 19880-1 (fuelling) systems; functional safety IEC 61511/IEC 61508.

Skills and experience required:

  • Ex installation/inspection to IEC/BS EN 60079; develop maintenance strategies and reliability methodologies (e.g., RCM).
  • Lead commissioning (FAT/SAT, loop checks, logic validation) and communicate effectively across Operations, Maintenance, Capital Delivery and SHEQ.
  • SIL awareness and functional safety lifecycle; ICS cybersecurity capability.
  • Minimum of 3 years in ICA within process, energy, utilities, hydrogen, petrochemical or heavy industry.
  • Involvement with COMAH safety reports and safety-critical instrumentation.

Qualifications:

  • Degree (BEng/BSc) in Instrumentation, Electrical/Electronic, or Control & Automation Engineering; BS 7671 (18th Edition).

Desirable:

  • Functional safety (IEC 61511), PLC vendor certifications, CompEx Ex01–Ex04 (or equivalent), ISA/IEC 62443 cybersecurity, Authorised Person (LV/Control).
