An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Working Manager to lead the day-to-day operation of a youngstock enterprise based in Southwest Scotland. The successful candidate will take full responsibility for the management of 1200-head youngstock, overseeing all aspects of calf and heifer rearing from the arrival of newborn calves through to in-calf replacement heifers. This is a hands-on position requiring someone with strong livestock husbandry skills, excellent organisational ability and the confidence to work within and lead a small team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overall management of the youngstock unit.
  • Care and supervision of approx 400 calves on milk, reared using an automatic calf feeding system.
  • Monitoring calf health, welfare and performance.
  • Managing the transition from calves through to breeding-age heifers.
  • Ensuring replacement heifers meet growth and fertility targets.
  • Maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with farm protocols.
  • Working closely with veterinary advisers and the wider farm team.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Good livestock handling and husbandry skills.
  • Experience working with calves and youngstock; previous management experience would be advantageous.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Good communication and people skills.
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team environment.
