We are seeking an experienced Control Engineer to join a growing engineering team supporting automated manufacturing and production environments across the Midlands region. This is a field-based position, providing technical support, fault finding, programming, and optimisation of PLC-controlled automation systems within live production facilities.

The successful candidate will have strong PLC programming and troubleshooting expertise, coupled with experience supporting automated machinery in manufacturing environments. Experience with machine vision systems is highly desirable and will be a significant advantage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and fault finding on automated production and manufacturing equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve PLC, controls, and automation-related issues to minimise production downtime.
  • Modify, develop, and optimise PLC programs to improve machine performance and reliability.
  • Support commissioning, upgrades, and continuous improvement projects across multiple customer sites.
  • Investigate and resolve electrical control system faults.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks.
  • Support and optimise machine vision systems, including inspection and quality control applications.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and reports following site visits.
  • Work closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to deliver effective solutions.
  • Travel throughout the Midlands region to support customer sites as required.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • PLC & Controls
    • Strong PLC programming, diagnostics, and fault-finding experience, ideally with one or more of the following platforms:
    • Siemens S7-1500
    • Rockwell Automation ControlLogix
    • Rockwell Automation CompactLogix
    • Mitsubishi Electric PLCs
    • Schneider Electric Modicon PLCs
    • Omron NX/NJ PLCs
  • Automation & Manufacturing
    • Proven experience supporting automated production equipment within a manufacturing environment.
    • Strong understanding of industrial automation systems and control architectures.
    • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex controls-related issues under production pressure.
    • Experience with HMI and SCADA systems would be advantageous.
  • Industrial Networks
    • Good understanding of industrial communication protocols, including:
    • Profinet
    • Ethernet/IP
    • Profibus
    • Other industrial networking technologies
  • Machine Vision Experience (Highly Desirable)
    • Experience of machine vision systems, including:
    • Cognex
    • Keyence
    • Similar machine vision platforms
    • Experience should include:
    • System setup and configuration
    • Fault finding and troubleshooting
    • Inspection optimisation
    • Production support and performance improvement

  • Qualified in Electrical, Controls, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Comfortable working independently in a field-based role.
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel across the Midlands region.
