About the role

You will lead a team of Java and React engineers at an organisation that is building its internal engineering capability. It is a hands‑on leadership role, with roughly 70% of your time on people management, team leadership and delivery, and 30% staying close to the code. The contract is 12 months, with a conversion to permanent planned. You will need to be on‑site in Manchester one to two days per week.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead, manage and develop a team of software engineers [confirm team size], including recruitment, onboarding and team structure
  • Coach and mentor engineers, give regular feedback and support their career development
  • Own team performance, engagement and ways of working
  • Work with engineering, product and delivery stakeholders to plan and prioritise technical delivery
  • Provide technical leadership across Java, Spring Boot and React applications, staying around 30% hands‑on through development, code reviews and solution design
  • Support architectural decisions, promote engineering best practice and drive continuous improvement

What we’re looking for

  • Essential: strong commercial software engineering experience with Java, Spring Boot and React
  • Essential: previous experience as an Engineering Manager, Software Engineering Manager, Technical Lead or similar
  • Essential: proven experience building, growing or shaping engineering teams, and managing and developing software engineers
  • Essential: strong people management skills, including coaching, mentoring, performance management and career development
  • Essential: strong understanding of automated testing, CI/CD, code quality and software design principles
  • Essential: strong stakeholder management and communication skills, and experience in Agile environments
  • Desirable: experience contributing to technical architecture and engineering decision‑making

What you get

  • A 12‑month fixed‑term contract with the intention to convert to permanent
  • Hybrid working, with one to two days per week on‑site in Manchester
  • The chance to shape a team and an engineering culture as the organisation builds its internal capability
  • A role that keeps you technically involved alongside leadership responsibility

This role suits

An engineer turned people leader who enjoys coaching a team, still wants to contribute to the code, and wants to build a collaborative, high‑performing engineering culture.
