Overview:
We are seeking a proven and technically strong Mechanical Construction Manager to lead the site-based delivery of a £40 million mechanical package on a major infrastructure project, based in Reading. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all mechanical construction activities including HVAC, process piping, plant installation, and specialist nuclear mechanical systems.

Role:
Working within a secure and highly regulated environment, the Mechanical Construction Manager will manage site activities from pre-construction through to commissioning and handover. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring excellent technical knowledge, contractor management skills, and a deep understanding of safety and compliance within a nuclear or similarly complex infrastructure environment.
- Manage the day-to-day mechanical construction operations on-site, ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality delivery of all works.
- Coordinate subcontractors, direct labour, and site logistics related to mechanical installation activities.
- Review and implement construction plans, method statements, risk assessments, and ensure compliance with CDM regulations and nuclear safety standards.
- Ensure the mechanical works comply with technical specifications, drawings, QA/QC procedures, and nuclear assurance frameworks.
- Drive health, safety, and environmental performance on site, leading toolbox talks, safety briefings, and audits.
- Monitor and report on progress, productivity, and performance of mechanical contractors.
- Interface with the design team, client, and other disciplines to resolve technical issues and construction queries.
- Oversee materials and equipment deliveries, inspections, and site storage in line with programme requirements.
- Support commissioning and handover activities, ensuring seamless transition from construction to testing and validation.
- Maintain accurate site records, reporting, and documentation for quality, safety, and programme compliance.
Qualifications:
- HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services (or equivalent).
- Minimum of 5 years\’ experience in mechanical construction management on major projects, preferably within the nuclear, defence, or high-security sectors.
- Proven track record managing large-scale mechanical packages (£20M+), ideally on infrastructure or complex building projects.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems installation, including HVAC, process pipework, and nuclear containment systems.
- Familiarity with UK regulatory frameworks including ONR, CDM 2015, and JSP requirements.
- Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, schedules, and method statements.
- Competency in using project management software and digital tools (e.g., Navisworks, Field View, Aconex, MS Project).
