Overview
Purpose of Job: The Associate Director leads a team that interfaces with Treasury. The team is responsible for funding and timely settlement/management of EBRD’s Banking and Treasury products across global markets. The role engages across the Operations and Service Management (OSM) function, Treasury, Cash Management and Payments, and represents EBRD in interactions with other institutions. The role also collaborates with OSM stakeholders at a senior level. In partnership with the Director, the role holder helps shape the function’s strategic direction and operational goals, fostering a continuous improvement culture.
Facts / Scale
- Leading/working amongst a team of ~10 staff responsible for day-to-day operational activity, within a wider Operations department of ~150 employees.
- Providing expertise across Treasury and Banking Products.
- Settlement of USD 1 billion per day (total balance sheet ~€50 billion; P&L up to €1 billion; 150–200 Donor Funds totaling ~€1.5 billion).
- Settlement of 50–200 trades per day.
- Ownership of completing individual deal transactions for their team/portfolio/product.
- Facilitating ~40,000 transactional payments per year (approx. €16bn equivalent value).
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
Operational Performance
- Plan, lead and manage the team’s operational delivery daily, ensuring a predictable service performance.
- Plan resources across the department; identify shortfalls and escalate through governance channels (capacity management).
- Demonstrate commitment to outstanding operational performance, measured by timeliness, quality and customer satisfaction.
- Communicate with relevant departments to ensure decision-makers are aware of risks involved.
Operational Standards, Risk, Control & Governance
- Partner with Operational Risk to establish an effective control environment; build a control-oriented culture.
- Maintain a culture of individual accountability for output quality.
- Manage risks within the established risk management framework.
- Improve the control environment, including preventative controls and automation to reduce detective/manual controls.
- Liaise with internal and external auditors as needed.
- Ensure new processes comply with quality standards, policies and relevant legislation.
- Manage business and external relationships to protect the Bank’s interests.
- Provide expertise in products, processes and procedures; lead interdepartmental projects to harmonise internal policies and procedures and educate wider teams.
Continuous Improvement
- Lead delivery of a ‘best in class’ operational function using contemporary techniques and practices.
- Develop links with international organisations to keep abreast of market practices and share outcomes across OSM.
- Understand the voice of the customer and use operational metrics to drive efficiencies and enhance service quality.
- Encourage prudent risk-taking and broader market awareness; support change initiatives.
Service Management & Third-Party Management
- Lead teams in a hybrid staff/outsourced structure where required.
- Manage external stakeholder relationships to ensure satisfactory service delivery.
- Support the transformation toward a metrics-based operations team with shared ownership.
- Define success criteria and monitor operational metrics to plan work queues and service levels.
- Manage supply and demand with the business to align with service levels where possible.
- Develop governance/service level agreements; measure customer satisfaction and drive improvements.
Financial Monitoring
- Plan, forecast and manage within a budget in collaboration with the Director.
- Ensure staffing levels align with budget and implementation needs.
Stakeholder Management
- Communicate with stakeholders across end-to-end processes up to Director and Managing Director levels.
- Represent the team to other Bank departments to influence decisions based on expertise.
- Participate in relevant committees as necessary.
Leadership & People Management
- Deputise for the OSM Director as required to ensure department continuity.
- Provide leadership, vision and direction; contribute to Bank goals.
- Performance management, recruitment, coaching and development of staff.
- Develop teams, build capabilities, and enhance recruiting to address skill gaps.
- Model the Bank’s values and ethical conduct; maintain high standards of integrity.
- Take on additional responsibilities as assigned by the OSM Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
The role requires seniority to manage responsibilities and handle pressures in a Banking environment. The candidate should have:
- University education in a related field or equivalent work experience.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to coach others.
- Comprehensive understanding of treasury and banking products transacted by EBRD; ability to tackle complex operational challenges.
- Excellent understanding of the impact of Operations Banking/Treasury functions on the organisation.
- Experience leading complex, dispersed teams and managing third-party relationships.
- Customer service orientation, leadership, and people management skills; ability to prioritise and resolve conflicts.
- Experience transforming a team using continuous improvement techniques.
- Ability to identify opportunities for improved business value and process improvement; drive adoption and outcomes.
- Experience using MI & Analytics to manage teams and drive a Service Management mindset.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication; negotiation and presentation skills.
- Strong problem-solving, people and conflict management capabilities with senior stakeholder credibility.
