The companies desk is looking for an assistant companies news editor to help lead the FT’s business coverage, with particular focus on the energy and natural resources sectors. This is a key position overseeing core FT stories at a time when unprecedented energy disruption is hitting companies, roiling markets and hurting economies. This editor should be confident leading our coverage on everything from the business impact of the Iran war, to the struggles of the oil majors to adapt to energy transition, the scramble to secure supplies of rare earths and other critical minerals, the grid bottlenecks holding back renewables and the return of mega‑M&A to the mining sector. Ideally we seek an editor with natural resources expertise and global experience. The role could pick up other sector responsibilities, depending on the successful candidate’s skills and experience. The role would suit an experienced corporate reporter with a desire to move into editing or an editor with sector expertise in the relevant areas (and most likely some reporting experience). This person would need to develop a close working relationship with the relevant reporters, both in London and in overseas offices, to manage workflow, chase news hard and produce distinctive, agenda‑setting content.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring the text of our stories sings and the non‑text elements are compelling
- Incorporating data and visual elements into corporate stories as standard
- Conceiving, planning and commissioning special projects, including series, investigations and data or visually‑led story‑telling
- Coordinating coverage and commissioning across sectors, including liaising with other London desks and teams overseas
- Deputising for colleagues on other sectors where required, as well as helping with the smooth running of the companies coverage more generally
This news editor will be expected to work regular Sunday shifts, as part of the desk rota.
Qualifications
Experience as a corporate reporter or a background in the energy or natural resources sectors, with strong editorial and reporting skills. Proven ability to commission eye‑catching stories, plan coverage and edit for punch and clarity.
