Role Summary

You are a versatile, experienced development engineer who is equally comfortable writing embedded firmware, designing analogue and digital circuits, and thinking at a system level about how products work end-to-end.

You don't pigeonhole yourself : you solve problems across firmware and hardware boundaries, contribute to multiple products, and bring a breadth of technical experience that specialists can't match.

You'll work across the HEMS product range, contributing where the need is greatest : whether that's writing bare-metal firmware for a new feature, designing a circuit for a new product revision, validating a hardware-firmware interface, or helping the team think through a tricky cross-domain problem.

This is a senior role with significant autonomy.

You'll own your work from specification through to delivery, collaborate closely with firmware and hardware specialists, and play an active role in mentoring more junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Firmware Development
  • - Write, test, and maintain embedded C firmware for ARM Cortex-M and other real-time
  • - microcontrollers (TM4C, PIC24, RL78)
  • - Implement features, drivers, and control logic across multiple HEMS products
  • - Write unit tests and contribute to test frameworks; debug using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analysers
  • - Write clean, well-structured firmware code adhering to MISRA-C guidelines
  • - Participate in peer code reviews; contribute to improving firmware quality across the team
  • Hardware Design
  • - Specify, design, document, and test analogue and digital circuit designs for embedded
  • - hardware
  • - Circuit analysis, modelling, and simulation using common industry tools
  • - DC-DC power supply design; power electronics awareness
  • - PCB schematic capture and layout (Altium Designer / Dip Trace)
  • - Work with the compliance team to ensure relevant standards are met in new designs
  • - Component research and collaboration with the procurement team
  • - Contribute to patent identification and IP support where relevant
  • System-Level Contribution
  • - Act as a cross-domain resource: resolve issues that span hardware and firmware boundaries
  • - Collaborate with engineering and production teams for test and product lifetime support
  • - Identify technical and project risks across disciplines
  • - Contribute to peer design reviews across firmware and hardware
  • Leadership & Collaboration
  • - Provide mentoring and technical guidance for junior and mid-level engineers
  • - Work closely with firmware developers, hardware engineers, QA, and the compliance team
  • - Manage and organise own work through Jira; participate in team stand-ups and sprint ceremonies
  • - Document and present work; contribute to team demos and technical reviews
  • - Engage in Continuous Professional Development to stay current with standards, microprocessors, and coding best practice
  • Required Qualifications and Experience
  • - Embedded C firmware : solid, production-quality experience writing bare-metal firmware for real-time microcontrollers
  • - Hardware design : proven track record of electronics lifecycle design; schematic capture and PCB layout experience
  • - Circuit design : experience designing circuits for embedded systems; DC-DC power supply design
  • - Embedded system understanding : comfortable at the firmware‑hardware boundary; reads and works from complex schematics
  • - Debugging : proficient with JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and lab equipment
  • - Version control : Git and Jira comfortable
  • - Communication : strong written and verbal communication; able to document and present technical work clearly
  • - Relevant engineering degree (Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or similar) or equivalent demonstrable practical experience
  • - Self‑directed and autonomous; comfortable managing own workload across multiple workstreams

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • - Experience with TI TM4C, Microchip PIC24, or Renesas RL78 platforms
  • - Familiarity with Altium Designer and/or Dip Trace
  • - Power electronics experience — switching power supplies, AC rectification, inrush current management
  • - Understanding of PCB layout for RF and high‑speed signal integrity
  • - Experience working with a compliance team on product certification
  • - Exposure to Io T communication hardware and protocols (awareness level, not ownership)
  • - Coding experience beyond C (Python useful for scripting/automation; C# or similar a bonus)
  • - Knowledge of energy systems : residential energy management, CT sensing, load control (directly relevant to our product range)
  • - AI‑assisted development : use of AI tools (Git Hub Copilot, Chat GPT, Claude) to accelerate design, documentation, and code review; we embrace this
  • - Innovation and curiosity : you spot a better way to solve a problem and you go after it; breadth of knowledge is your superpower
