Overview
As an Apprentice Dental Nurse, you\’ll support clinicians to deliver a range of high-quality dental treatments and help the smooth running of your surgery and the practice. You will enjoy being part of a team that\’s passionate about caring for patients and helping the nation smile. Alongside your role, you will achieve a level 3 in Dental Nursing.
Responsibilities
- Reception, including answering the phone and greeting patients
- Dealing with patient queries
- Taking payments
- Booking appointments and follow-ups
- Sterilising and preparing equipment for dentists
- Recording and dealing with patient records
- Supporting patients\\\’ well-being and dental experience
- Cleaning dental areas, including chairs
- Managing stock of equipment and supplies
- Any other duties to support the dentists and senior team to provide effective patient care
- Identify relevant and appropriate dental, oral, craniofacial, and general anatomy
- Recognise the diversity of anatomy across the patient population
- Evaluate health risks of prescribed, non-prescribed and recreational drug use and misuse on oral and general health
- Evaluate the scientific principles underpinning the use of materials and biomaterials, their limitations and selection, with emphasis on those used in dentistry
- Identify signs of abuse, neglect or emotional trauma and understand safeguarding welfare systems
- Identify signs of normal and abnormal facial growth and dental development milestones and explain their significance
- Assess patients\\\’ anxiety, experience, and expectations regarding dental care
- Contribute to relevant special investigations and diagnostic procedures
- Undertake orthodontic assessment
- Obtain valid consent from patients, explaining relevant factors and legal requirements within scope of practice
- Record accurate patient history and contemporaneous records
- Accurately record dental charting and oral health assessments
- Prepare records, images, equipment and materials for clinical assessment
- Process and manage dental radiographs and images
- Manage patient anxiety, communicate effectively to reassure and support
- Identify changes in patient oral health status and take appropriate action
- Make arrangements for follow-up care as prescribed
- Provide chairside support to the operator during treatment
- Prepare, mix and handle dental materials
- Identify and manage risks in the clinical environment safely
- Implement and manage decontamination and infection control procedures according to current guidelines
- Prepare and maintain the clinical environment including instruments and equipment
- Identify, assess, and manage medical emergencies
- Provide personalised preventive advice to patients and carers to promote self-care and oral health
- Support management of patients with acute oral conditions with appropriate team involvement
- Adopt an evidence-based approach to clinical practice
- Communicate effectively with patients, the public and colleagues, including where English is not first language
- Maintain accurate patient records in accordance with legal requirements and best practice
- Display care, compassion, empathy and respect in all professional interactions
- Demonstrate effective teamwork and contribute to a supportive dental team
- Where appropriate, manage, refer or delegate work according to scope of practice
- Take a patient-centred approach and raise concerns about health, behaviour or performance when needed
- Comply with systems and processes to support safe patient care and current best practice guidelines
- Act within legal, governance and health and safety requirements
- Demonstrate integrity, accountability and professionalism in all settings

- Salary: £15,704 to £25,396.80, depending on age
- Qualification: Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard (City & Guilds)
- Delivery: Online study with blended learning; Integrated Level 3 Dental Nurse qualification
- Training Location: At your appointed job role (Dental Practice) + Online
- Off-the-Job Training: Provided and paid for by employer
- Hours: Monday – Friday, 7.45am – 4.45pm. 40 hours per week
- Start date: Tuesday 21 October 2025
- Duration: 1 year 6 months
- Outcome: Diploma in Dental Nursing Level 3 on completion
