AI scientist & entrepreneur | EF def/acc\’24 | Builder of the physical AI revolution | ML + Autonomous Systems + robotics
We are looking for a Lead Robotics Systems Engineer to take ownership of the software architecture for \’Mastermind,\’ our flagship multi-agent coordination product. Your primary responsibility will be to architect, build, and deploy the central software system that transforms collections of simple robots into a cohesive, intelligent team. You will lead the integration of symbolic planning, probabilistic inference, and real-world robotic control, using our high-fidelity simulation environment (NVIDIA Isaac Sim) to rapidly test, validate, and deploy your designs. This role is central to our core mission and reports directly to the CTO.
Who we are
Mutable Tactics is a pioneering technology company specializing in advanced autonomy for squad robotic systems. We’re blending cutting-edge computer vision, ML, multi-agent AI and probabilistic inference techniques into autonomous UxV solutions for complex, mission-critical operations. Our team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of robotics and AI, with a strong focus on safety and ethical considerations in autonomous systems. Based in London and Cambridge we’re building a diverse team of talented individuals who share our passion for innovation and pushing the boundaries of what\’s possible in autonomous systems. We offer a dynamic and collaborative work environment where creativity and problem-solving are highly valued.
About the Role
At MT we are developing building the next frontier of robot collaboration. You’ll have the unique opportunity to shape how the future of robot collaboration looks like.
What you\’ll get to do
- System Architecture: Lead the architecture and development of the Mastermind system, our core multi-agent decision-making engine. You will be the primary owner of the software system that connects our technical pillars into a field-ready product.
- Modular Integration: Architect a modular, scalable software system based on our established three-tier (Symbolic, Metric, HW) design. You will define the data flows and APIs between core components like the behaviours, tasks and knowledge nodes**.**
- ROS 2 / DDS Expertise: Design and implement the core communication backbone of the Mastermind system using ROS 2, defining custom message types and managing QoS policies to ensure reliable, real-time performance in contested environments.
- Simulation-Driven Development: Drive the hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SITL) testing strategy, ensuring that system behavior in simulation is representative of real-world performance.
- Cross-Team Leadership: Act as the primary technical bridge between the Core ML team (developing planning and inference algorithms) and the Physical AI team (deploying solutions on hardware).
What we’d like to see
- Multi-Agent Systems Expertise: Demonstrable experience architecting, developing, and deploying software for multi-robot or multi-agent systems. This is a mandatory requirement.
- Robotics Systems Knowledge: 7+ years of experience with a deep, cross-domain understanding of robotics, including perception, state estimation, planning (both symbolic and geometric), and control systems.
- Strong Programming and Architecture Skills: Proficiency in Python and C++. A proven track record of architecting complex, real-time software systems, not just implementing existing designs.
- ROS 2 Mastery: Deep expertise in ROS 2 and its underlying DDS middleware. Experience should go beyond basic pub/sub and include designing robust, multi-node systems.
- High-Fidelity Simulation: Proficiency with at least one high-fidelity robotics simulator (e.g., NVIDIA Isaac Sim, Gazebo). You should understand how to model sensors, robot dynamics, and environments accurately.
What will set you apart
- Experience with automated planning languages (e.g., PDDL) and symbolic reasoning systems.
- Familiarity with applying probabilistic ML models (e.g., Gaussian Processes) to robotics problems like Informative Path Planning.
- Experience taking a complex robotics system from initial concept to a high TRL (Technology Readiness Level).
- Knowledge of safety standards and compliance in robotics.
We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet all bullet points on our wish list.
This is a hybrid position, the successful candidate will be expected to work from the office at least 3 days a week.
Join us in pushing the boundaries of autonomous drone technology and contribute to innovative solutions in the field of robotics.
