At Roman Music Therapy Services, we believe that learning never stops and the hunger to be at the forefront of our field is a career long pursuit. Being an integral part of educating the newest members of our field is at the core of our values. We are a community-based organization and serve people across eastern Massachusetts.
Our music therapy internship is an eight-month, full-time commitment that will provide you with clinical experience in serving a range of music therapy participants in various settings. You must be currently enrolled in a Music Therapy program with an accredited college or university and eligible to apply for an internship.
As an intern with Roman Music Therapy Services, you will have the unique experience of working alongside a close-knit team of music therapists, clinical supervisors, faculty supervisors, and administrative staff members.
Compensation:
- $250 Monthly Stipend for 8 months (not to exceed $2,000 over the course of the internship)
- $250 Stipend towards Conference Expenses
- Mileage Reimbursement for travel between sessions, not including first or last drive of the day
Your future music therapy clients include, but are not limited to:
- Babies and toddlers in community programs and early intervention
- Children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Children and adults with mental health needs
- Older adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s and other age-related needs
- Community members
How Do You Know If You Are the Right Fit?
- Basic proficiency using guitar, piano, percussion and voice in a clinical setting.
- Practicum experience with at least 3 different clinical populations.
- Practicum experience in both group and individual settings.
- Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written formats.
- Professional, self-motivating and excellent organizational skills.
- Basic competency in client documentation including assessment, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and termination.
- Ability to accept and incorporate constructive criticism and feedback from several supervisors in order to adapt/improve skills as a clinician and musician when necessary.
- Must have reliable transportation, valid license and proof of insurance.
- Must be willing to travel to various sites throughout Eastern Massachusetts.
The process for the selection of interns is a 4-step process and includes:
- Step 1: Submission of a complete application packet (including application form, resume, essay, two sample session plans, and three letters of recommendation) by the deadline date.
- Step 2: Initial Zoom meeting with Internship Director to determine if RMTS is a good fit for the applicant; if so, applicant moves to the next step.
- Step 3: Invitation for a follow-up Zoom group interview with Internship Director and Supervising Therapists, after which a decision is made if the applicant moves to the fourth and final step.
- Step 4: Invitation for an on-site, in-person visit at the office in Wakefield, including observations and audition.
For the audition, applicants should prepare:
- 2 songs on guitar with different styles/genres, time signatures, keys, strumming patterns, etc. (plan on singing while accompanying yourself).
- 1 song on piano/keyboard. (plan on singing while accompanying yourself).
- Two of the songs (either both on guitar, or one on guitar and one on piano) should be clinical songs, presented as interactive interventions with the interviewers as participants. These should address two different populations and include verbal descriptions of the intended goal(s).
- The third song (either on guitar or piano) should be a song of personal significance that you feel emotionally connected to. This song will not be presented as an intervention, but rather as a performance.
- The audition also includes a group drumming improvisation experience facilitated by the interviewers.
To be considered for an internship, you must submit a complete application packet (including application form, resume, essay, two sample session plans, and three letters of recommendation) by the deadline date for consideration. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Application deadlines for the two possible internship start dates are as follows:
- For a January start, application packet is due August 1 (of the previous calendar year).
- For a July start, application packet is due February 1 (of the same calendar year).
