Music Education Islington (MEI) is the music hub for the London Borough of Islington. MEI is led by Islington Council and Guildhall School of Music & Drama, in partnership with Music in Secondary Schools Trust and leading arts organisations and funders.

We are looking for a number of motivated, self-employed tutors to teach in primary schools and our MEI Music Centres across Islington, to start in September. Applicants should have good experience of whole class, small group and individual teaching, including experience of teaching mixed ability groups and enjoy working with students of all ages.

Candidates need to have public liability insurance and must have an Enhanced DBS Check. This should be dated within the last two years or you will need to provide proof of being subscribed to the Update Service. Music Education Islington is committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children and young people and expect all tutors to share in this commitment.

All tutors have access toCharanga music school which provides a wide range of resources across all instrument as well as singing and curriculum teaching.

The tutor vacancies are for the following areas:

  • Classroom teaching (with singing) – Primary School Classroom teaching with a strong focus on singing (+ one instrument, ideally brass).Teaching days and hours: Tuesday/Wednesday, 1.5 teaching days
  • Musicianship – Musicianship for various ages in after school Music Centres from primary to secondary. Teaching days and hours: Mondays and Wednesday, after school, between 2 and 2.5 hours
  • Small group clarinet and keyboard – Primary School group lessons. Teaching days and hours: Tuesdays 1.30-3.30 (small group clarinet lessons) / Fridays 3 hours (small group clarinet, keyboard)
  • Whole-class string teaching – Teaching days open for discussion, 2 full teaching days

Selected candidates who have not previously taught for MEI will be interviewed. Our current tutors may not require an interview.

Instrumental tutors new to group teaching are welcome to get in touch – necessary training steps will be made available (hourly rate will be adjusted).

Successful candidates will be able to access our professional development programme.
