The Royal Highland Fusiliers Trust is planning to undertake an ambitious project to transform its museum on Sauchiehall Street to deliver a contemporary and modern visitor experience reimagining the approach to interpreting military history. The RHF museum is an established Glasgow cultural institution; the project will significantly contribute to realising the vision of the Sauchiehall Street Heritage and Culture District, re-establishing the area as the cultural heart of the city, connected with all its communities and attracting more visitors and footfall to a vibrant city centre destination.

The Royal Highland Fusiliers Trust is looking to recruit a highly professional, self‑motivated and experienced individual to deliver the project and lead its museum’s redevelopment journey to be at the heart of Glasgow’s cultural attractions. We are looking for someone with drive and ambition, an energetic creative thinker who has experience of project delivery and museum management.

As Museum Manager you will be responsible to the Museum Trustees and work closely with the Museum Working Group (MWG) and the external consultancy team to deliver the feasibility study, subsequent capital project and then operate the museum. There will be a requirement for strong project management skills, particularly during the early stages of the creation of our new museum from inception to completion and opening. You will be the primary point of contact for the architect leading the feasibility study then, lead and manage our Capital Development Project, ensuring all outcomes are met and the project is delivered to the programme and budget. On opening you will manage the daily operating of the facility and staff.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Capital Project

You will work closely with the Museum Working Group and the external consultants. You will manage and support the project external consultants for museum design and other consultancy services, including but not restricted to feasibility study, interpretive planning, content development digital media, business and funding planning, quantity surveying and academic historians. Project management, funding application and curatorial experience would be very valuable.

You will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the feasibility study
  • Delivering the capital project
  • Development of final interpretive content and any further research required to complete object display design proposals
  • Lead and direct assessment, cataloguing (with Collection Manager) and conservation of the Collection in designing the new museum and also storing and conservation of the collection during project delivery
  • Lead the interpretive planning process
  • Deliver the object lists to develop the thematic exhibition display designs (with the design team)
  • Deliver the collection management plan in conjunction with the Collections Manager

Following the opening of the new museum you will be responsible to the Trustees for the daily operating of the museum. You will be responsible for the production of the Annual Operating Plan and for the day‑to‑day running of the museum, the management of staff and the coordination and work rotas of volunteers.

Our new museum will be free entry and will therefore rely substantially on revenue raising activities, principally retail sales for income generation. You will be involved helping with the creation of a new range of retail merchandise and the setting up and running of the Museum Gift Shop, with external consultancy help in creating the shop and assistance in running it.

You will respond and help with public and academic enquiries relating to the collection and support and facilitate access to the collection. You will continue academic research of the collection and develop and maintain an expert knowledge of the collection and subject areas. Your role will include liaising with Glasgow Museums (Glasgow Life) management and staff in the planning and booking of Temporary Exhibition galleries with the possibility of joint exhibitions, events and activities.

Skills and Experience

  • You should demonstrate you have the relevant experience in a similar role or a recognised museum qualification.
  • You have experience of managing projects, project budgets and including reporting to funders.
  • You can demonstrate that you have high museum management quality curatorial and museum management experience in similar museums to ours.
  • You will demonstrate knowledge of Museums Accreditation processes and working knowledge of collections management.
  • You should be educated to degree level (British history or military studies an advantage).
  • You will show that you are an effective communicator, orally and written.
  • You are able to develop good practices that promote equality, value, diversity, and inclusivity in a global community.
  • You have experience and a good working knowledge of best practice working with volunteers.
  • You can show that you have experience of working with exhibition designers, interpretive planners and other industry consultants.
  • You are able to demonstrate your abilities in managing a challenging workload with deadlines and delivering exhibitions on time and to budget.
  • You have experience in organising, researching and putting on temporary exhibitions, events and activities.
  • You will have very good IT skills and be familiar with all standard museum software programmes.
  • You can show that you have an understanding and experience of working with educators.
  • You can show that you are able to work weekends and evenings as required (All staff will be required to work to support additional events outside normal working hours).
