Are you inspired by Museum of the Home's vision to Share Experiences of Home to Connect People, Place and Planet? Do you share our belief that homes and home-life have a role to play in both contributing to, and finding a solution to, the climate emergency; that Earth is our home and that change can begin at home? Are you passionate about the cultural sector and its ability to make a difference?

Museum of the Home is looking to appoint a trustee with the relevant skills, knowledge and experience to take on the role of Climate Action Trustee. As a trustee of the Charity your responsibilities will be to all areas of the charity’s functions but with a focus on climate action and nature positive practice. The Trustee (Climate Action) serves as a key advocate and advisor for the Museum’s core value of ‘Climate Active’ and our stated practice of ‘nature positive’.

Climate Action supports our work in two ways: how we manage the museum site and operations towards our goal of being net zero by 2040 and through the content we develop for our visitors. You will serve as a guardian and advocate for ecosystems, ensuring that the health and long-term interests of nature are represented in governance, decision-making, and stewardship. In particular you will have a keen interest in urban nature; the interactions between, and sustainable co-existence of, humans and non-humans on this planet we call our home.

The usual term, or length of service, for our trustees is three years. Trustees may serve for up to two terms. We normally expect trustees to prepare for and take part in 4–5 board meetings per year. The role, as defined by the Charity Commission, is an unpaid voluntary position. The role provides opportunities for further development of a wide range of governance skills. Board members also gain experience of, and can develop networks in, the heritage and cultural sectors and beyond. We provide in-house induction for new trustees, which can be tailored to meet individual needs.

How to apply

A CV and statement of what you can bring to the role will be used to select candidates for interview. Your statement can take the form of a written piece (max. 2 sides of A4) or a 4-minute filmed or audio response. Your written statement/video/audio response should address why you would be well suited to the role of trustee with a remit for Climate Action, taking into consideration the ‘Purpose’ and ‘Key Responsibilities’ sections of the attached document (pages 5, 6 and 7).

Closing date: 30 November 2026

Interviews dates: Exact date tbc – likely early-mid December 2026

Applications are welcomed from those with little or no prior board experience - we are looking for someone who will be able to fulfil the purpose and key responsibilities of the Climate Action Trustee role. The Museum is committed to ensuring its trustee appointments are diverse and benefit from a broad range of skills and perspectives, so that the Board of the Museum of the Home is representative of the people it serves and we encourage applications from those whose experiences and perspectives are currently under-represented in the Museum sector.
