The Waterworks Museum – Hereford is seeking an Accreditation Mentor with a focus on collections management and care. Established in 1974, this small, independent museum is run wholly by a dedicated team of volunteers (awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Services in 2022). It is an Accredited Museum and last returned in 2023. Based at the original pumping station of 1854, the site is owned by benefactors Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW). Volunteers maintain rare steam‑powered working engines dating from the 1850s alongside a wide & growing collection of pumps, engines & artefacts connected with the supply of clean water. The museum attracts around 3,500 visitors each year and runs a highly rated and cost‑free primary Key Stage 1 & 2 curriculum programme during term times, funded by DCWW.

The museum is seeking an Accreditation Mentor with collections care and management expertise who can support the museum. The role will focus on the development of Spectrum procedures and the care and conservation of the collection. Experience of digital catalogues would be beneficial. The Governing Body recommends an initial visit on a steam event to set the role in context, then is happy for advice to be provided either in‑person or on Zoom, with an annual in‑person visit to their AGM.

Responsibilities
  • Support the museum in the development of Spectrum procedures.
  • Assist with the care and conservation of the collection.
  • Provide guidance on digital cataloguing systems.
  • Offer advisory support in person or via Zoom, including an annual in‑person visit to the AGM.
Qualifications
  • Expertise in collections management and care.
  • Experience with digital catalogues and conservation practices.
  • Strong communication and advisory skills.
