Based within Murray’s Initiative Head Office in North Claremont Street with community work in Greater Glasgow Area.
Starting Salary £22,932 per annum (pro rata)
Part-time - 10 hours per week – Fixed term until 31st March 2027
Ideal working pattern: 10am – 3pm 2 days per week, the specific days can be discussed. We understand that many will have other commitments outside of work and so flexible working, part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.

Established in 1965, Murray’s Initiative adopts a long-term, trauma-informed and asset-based approach to changing the culture around substance use. Its services are built on a person-centred, harm-reduction model, supporting people whether their goal is to reduce consumption or achieve abstinence.
Murray’s Initiative offers free, confidential counselling services for people concerned about their own or someone else's drinking. Murray’s Initiative delivers a range of interventions including groupwork and employability support as well as a number of holistic and inclusive services, such as a women’s service for survivors of gender-based violence, young persons peer education service, LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing support and tailored wellbeing programmes.
Murray’s Initiative is also a recognised provider of professional development, offering a comprehensive training portfolio including education aimed at increasing awareness of alcohol use and promoting healthier lifestyles, COSCA Counselling Skills and a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. Murray’s Initiative deliver services over 6 days per week and throughout Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire, helping people make meaningful, positive change in their lives.

About the Role:
The role of Community Engagement Worker is to provide a community-based Alcohol Brief Intervention (ABI) service in the wider community and primary care settings within Greater Glasgow in partnership with other statutory, voluntary and community agencies within the area.
As part of the role, the Community Engagement Worker will host alcohol information stalls in communities across Greater Glasgow to talk to members of the public about alcohol consumption and provide evidence based screenings and interventions. The postholder will also support the wider Education & Development team on delivery of the Alcohol Brief Interventions Skills training. Travel throughout Greater Glasgow will be essential for this role.
The Community Engagement Worker will report to the Service Manager – Education & Development. This post requires membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme for protected adults. Successful applicants will be required to join the PVG Scheme.
Key Responsibilities of the Community Engagement Worker:
- Assist in the development of the Alcohol Brief Intervention Service in the wider community and primary care settings within Greater Glasgow.
- Prepare and deliver ABI’s in Wider Community and Primary Care settings in line with agreed targets.
- Record and evaluate the effectiveness of the Alcohol Brief Intervention strategies.
- Promote consistent practice and standards in relation to Alcohol Brief Intervention strategies.
- Co-facilitate Alcohol Brief Intervention training sessions and provide ongoing support for staff trained in ABI Direct Delivery.
- Ensure the service is achieving outcomes and relevant targets for ABI’s.
- Encourage participation of Primary Care & Wider Community staff including Community, voluntary and statutory agencies in the development of ABI strategies.
- Record and maintain statistics using systems in place.
- Undertake any other duties as required by the Service Manager – Education & Development.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A track record of good written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience of working in a community setting or addictions field.
- Experience of interagency and partnership working.
- Experience of data collection and inputting.
- It would be ideal if the person has experience in delivering Alcohol Brief Interventions.
- A clean, current UK driving license would be beneficial for this role.
Skills and Competencies:
- An ability to work independently and manage own personal diary.
- A knowledgeable understanding of the social media of health.
- Working understanding of Harm Reduction & Alcohol prevention strategies.
- An ability to produce and deliver health and wellbeing topics.
- A working understanding of IT systems such as Microsoft Office packages and Zoom.
- The postholder should be skilled in planning presentations and delivering.
- It would be preferred if the ideal candidate could work and engage with groups of people across different age ranges.
