Murphy is recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer (HV Cables) to work with our Applied Engineering team in Kentish Town, London. Our engineering teams represent a multi‐disciplined range of engineering skills, adding value across all our sectors and pushing the boundaries of digital construction, engineering innovation and design to deliver intelligent, sustainable and economical engineering solutions.
Under the banner of Murphy Applied Engineering, our in‐house teams include civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical and process engineers. They design both permanent and temporary works for projects in all our locations and are a trusted source of expert advice for both Murphy colleagues and external customers.
A day in the life of a Murphy Senior Design Engineer:
- Developing HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
- Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
- Prepare plant and equipment technical specification, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports.
- Ensuring correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects, attend, and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
- Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, Sheath induced voltage calculations and others.
- Ensuring all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations, relevant legislation and company procedures.
- Ensure that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works and formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the programme to proceed without delay.

- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering
- Detail design experience of HV cabling projects
- Co‐ordination of HV Cable Works design and interfaces throughout project lifecycle including development of drawings & calculations
- An understanding of the commercial and technical issues in undertaking a large‐scale construction project
- Ability and confidence to discuss engineering issues with people across various levels and disciplines
