General Counsel

Establish, design and model UK-wide legal team as shared service for the UK based business operations based on the Target Operating Model agreed by the Board of Management.

In addition, lead and manage the Legal function for the MRS-GM business as trusted legal business partner and advise on all legal issues within the MRS-GM group of businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Form and shape UK-wide legal team based on the business partner principles ensuring high quality functional legal excellence to be supplied to all local lines of business in accordance with highest professional standards.
  • Focus topical expertise in centres of excellence in order to avoid duplication of resources.
  • Ensure clear accountabilities and decision rights of Legal Business Partners and simultaneously foster a culture of collaboration and cross-departmental exchange and representation.
  • Coach and develop individual legal business partners to enable them to assume full accountability for their areas and enable individual functional growth.
  • Ensure standard best legal practices for comparable topics across UK lines of business.
  • Carefully manage and challenge outside counsel spending.
  • Strive for smart governance taking a lean and proportionate approach.

Operational Legal Business Partner Responsibilities

  • Ensure and provide state-of-the-art legal advice to all UK based legal entities of MRS-GM, in particular also including its Lloyds Syndicate, and work with stakeholders accordingly.
  • Collaborate with other regional Munich Re legal resources and delegate to them legal topics that affect countries outside the UK.
  • Review on a continuous basis, in collaboration with the business, legal support to ensure it meets the emerging needs of MRS-GM and supports the growth of primary specialty business.
  • Oversee provision of wordings advice to entities within MRS-GM and co-ordinate legal and wordings interaction with Corporate Underwriting in order to ensure processes are consistent with MR Group.
  • Manage legal advice in relation to outsourcing contracts both intra-group and externally.
  • Manage interaction with and work with the Claims function to facilitate oversight of litigation reporting within GSI4.
  • Support implementation of the Legal, Risk and Compliance Target Operating Model.

Knowledge and Skills

  • English Law qualified solicitor
  • Current Practising Certificate
  • Senior lawyer with extensive professional experience acquired in private practice and/or in-house, preferably within the insurance industry.
  • Proven track record of ability to effectively and efficiently manage and drive to completion complex legal matters.
  • Understanding of business strategy and the work of the other departments within the organisation.
  • Good motivational and personnel management skills.
  • Negotiation skills
