At Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets (MRS-GM), it is our ambition to become the leading Primary Specialty Insurance provider, underpinned by an effective and adaptable strategy, superior products and industry leaders working in a supportive environment to achieve this. At the heart of our success is a strong culture where people are encouraged to be present, bold and curious, allowing them to achieve their individual goals.
As Head of AI, you own the AI strategy for Munich Re Specialty, Global Markets and drive it into execution as the function matures. You set the strategy and direction for how we use AI, aligned to our commercial objectives, and translate it into a prioritised, governed roadmap of use cases. AI creates value on two fronts: it sharpens front-office decisions — underwriting, pricing, portfolio steering, and it also changes how we run: how we deliver change, how we operate, and how much of our processing can be automated or augmented. You hold both, and prioritise across them.
Today the role is strategy-led: shaping the ambition, prioritising use cases, building capability and standing up responsible-AI governance. As the portfolio matures, it moves into direct ownership of delivery, with the team and patterns to support it. You partner with Enablement, Analytics, underwriting, pricing, operations, change and the CIO function to put AI into production safely.
Role Overview
- Own and evolve the AI strategy, keeping it aligned to the ExCo ambition and Ambition 2030 outcomes.
- Identify, prioritise and sequence AI use cases across front-office value and operational delivery.
- Move the roadmap from concept to production as the function matures.
- Own AI governance: responsible-AI controls, model-data lineage, and alignment with emerging regulation.
- Build AI capability and literacy across MRS, aligned to the Munich Data & AI Academy skill matrix.
- Establish delivery patterns that let AI scale as a repeatable capability, not one-off builds.
- Hold the AI narrative at executive level.
- Evidence realised benefit post-deployment, not projected benefit alone.
Responsibilities
- AI strategy and roadmap: Own the strategy and translate it into a prioritised, sequenced roadmap aligned to the ExCo ambition.
- Use-case prioritisation: Identify, size and prioritise opportunities across underwriting, pricing, operations and change; maintain a transparent view of the pipeline and its expected value.
- AI in how we operate: Apply AI to our own delivery and operating processes, not only to front-office decisions — reducing effort, cycle time and cost in how change and operations are run.
- AI governance by design: Own responsible-AI controls, model-data lineage, evaluation and monitoring, aligned to Munich Re Group AI governance. Keep controls proportionate to risk and embedded in workflows.
- AI-readiness partnership: Work with Enablement so priority data is usable, discoverable and fit for AI; consume certified data products and the semantic layer.
- Execution as the function matures: Take direct ownership of AI delivery — prioritised use case to deployed, monitored, supported service — building the team and patterns to support it.
- Capability and literacy: Build AI capability aligned to the Data & AI Academy skill matrix; act as senior point of expertise.
- Executive narrative: Own the AI story at ExCo and with underwriters, translating technical possibility into commercial outcomes.
- Value evidence: Track and evidence realised benefit; source London Market proof points to de-risk investment.
- Deployment partnership: Partner with the CIO function on secure, scalable deployment and integration with the strategic platforms.
Knowledge and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as data and information management, computer science, or a related business discipline. Certifications e.g., Certified Data Management Professional is desirable.
- Proven experience setting and delivering an AI strategy in a commercial setting, with a track record of moving AI from concept into scaled, production use.
- Experience applying AI both to front-office decision-making and to how change and operations are delivered.
- Strong grasp of the modern AI ecosystem, MLOps, evaluation and monitoring, and responsible-AI practice.
- AI governance experience and the ability to make data fit for AI, working through certified data products and a semantic layer.
- Specialty / London Market fluency (delegated authority, ceded reinsurance, entity resolution, Lloyd’s data standards), or the ability to acquire it quickly.
- Ability to hold the AI narrative credibly with underwriters and at ExCo, translating technical possibility into commercial outcomes.
- Ability to balance speed, risk and control, implementing proportionate governance that enables delivery while maintaining safeguards.
- Strong leadership and influencing skills, with the credibility to mobilise cross-functional teams and grow a delivery capability over time.
- Excellent communication, translating complex AI concepts into clear, non-technical narratives.
