We are looking for an Area Manager to provide leadership and strategic oversight for all highways maintenance and reinstatement operations across our regions. You will be responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and commercially successful delivery of all works, managing Senior Supervisors, supervisors, site teams, and subcontractors to achieve operational, financial, and client performance targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership
    • Lead the delivery of multiple concurrent highways maintenance, reinstatement gangs across the region.
    • Manage and support both Senior Supervisors and Supervisors to ensure works are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
    • Oversee programming, resource planning, and performance monitoring to achieve KPIs and contractual obligations.
    • Drive operational efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement across all delivery teams.
    • Ensure compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA), Chapter 8, CDM Regulations, and local authority requirements.
  • Health, Safety & Quality Management
    • Champion a strong health, safety, and environmental culture across all sites.
    • Conduct regular site audits and lead safety meetings with supervisory staff.
    • Review and approve RAMS, inspection reports, and corrective action plans.
    • Ensure reinstatement and maintenance works meet technical, environmental, and client quality standards.
  • Commercial & Financial Control
    • Take ownership of regional budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
    • Monitor productivity, cost control across area.
    • Identify commercial risks and opportunities, implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Client & Stakeholder Management
    • Act as the primary point of contact for client representatives, local authorities, and stakeholders within the region.
    • Lead progress meetings, performance reviews, and audits with clients.
    • Develop strong client relationships and identify opportunities for additional works or contract growth.
    • Manage public interface issues and uphold the company’s professional reputation.
  • People Leadership & Development
    • Line manage Senior Supervisors, Supervisors and provide leadership to the wider field workforce.
    • Promote a culture of accountability, performance, and development.
    • Identify training needs and succession opportunities within the team.
    • Support workforce planning and recruitment for operational roles.
  • Reporting & Governance
    • Provide regular operational reports to the Contracts Manager or Operations Manager.
    • Monitor and report on KPIs, health and safety statistics, productivity, and financial performance.
    • Contribute to strategic planning, business development, and operational reviews.

  • NVQ Level 6: Construction Site Management
  • NRSWA Supervisor
  • First Aid
  • Drug & Alcohol Tester
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)
  • Significant experience in highways maintenance, reinstatement, or surfacing supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of NRSWA, Chapter 8, H&S, and quality management requirements.
  • Proven track record of managing multiple teams or sites simultaneously (deal breaker)
  • Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
  • Strong client-facing and communication abilities.
  • Competent IT skills, including the use of work management software and Microsoft Office.
