OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT/SECTION: GCIB Financial Institutions Team is the coverage team for Financial Institutions in EMEA. As part of the EMEA FI Strategy, the Sponsor Coverage Team was established 5 years ago to focus specifically on the Financial Sponsors client base of MUFG in EMEA. This team has the responsibility to expand business with Financial Sponsors by collaborating with various stakeholders across all MUFG divisions.
NUMBER OF DIRECT REPORTS: 2/3 employees reporting directly to this position.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: This role will form an integral part of the Coverage Team for Financial Sponsors/Alternative Asset Managers and related product teams - Leverage Finance, Project Finance, Subscription Finance, NAV finance, Asset Based Lending, Derivatives & Securitisation, with a view to achieving high quality revenue growth and product cross sell from this client base in order to deliver on one of the key pillars of the EMEA FI Strategy. This role will involve working closely with the Department Head and team to generate profitable growth by developing new and deepening existing relationships with Financial Sponsors in the EMEA, supporting the global FI Strategy and liaising closely with internal product offices, risk, compliance and legal departments. This will mean leading on complex deal origination, structuring, ongoing portfolio management and junior team mentoring and support. This position has a clear leadership role to drive and optimize the strategy for Financial Sponsors in EMEA, particularly focusing on driving new product development and origination for fund‑level solutions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities involve, but are not limited to, the following:
- Working closely with the Department Head and team to deliver on the EMEA FI Sponsor Strategy including achieving financial targets, driving product development, enhancing and generally managing the relationship with Financial Sponsor clients.
- Taking full ownership of a subset of clients and managing the relationship from end‑to‑end including at C‑suite level.
- Leading the origination of fund finance (including Subscription Finance, NAV, Equity Bridge Loans etc) and fund level FX in close cooperation with the Fund Finance, Global Markets and Global Structured Solutions (GSS) teams.
- Leading preparations of presentation materials, pitch books, terms sheets etc. to enable effective marketing to the clients.
- Maintaining a close and open relationship with the key asset level teams such as Project Finance, Leveraged Finance, NAVs, ABLs, Securitisation and Direct Lending, ensuring good (two‑way) information flow and access for clients.
- Advocating for key client solutions and relationship asks in coordination with the relevant product teams and other key stakeholders to deliver the Sponsor Coverage strategy.
- Optimizing the marketing effort by proactive collaboration with Product Teams and other stakeholders in order to enhance cross‑sell opportunities in coordination with the broader Coverage Team.
- Driving the ongoing development and execution of an FX product offering for Financial Sponsors.
- Preparing internal Deal Screening materials with a focus on the MUFG business case and returns and engaging with senior management to secure relevant approvals.
- Discussing, presenting, understanding risk, ensuring compliance within MUFG and wider regulations, policies and procedures and providing sufficient information to enable appropriate credit decisions to be made for clients.
- Leading with the management of Account Planning to ensure that relationships are driven and coordinated across key stakeholders to deliver sustainable growth.
- Liaising with other regional product and coverage teams as appropriate to ensure coordinated and seamless client service for global Financial Sponsors.
- Supporting/managing junior team members with management information, data collection, analysis and timely reporting to senior management related to the Financial Institutions business.
- Supporting the expansion of the Sponsor Coverage product range across EMEA through the strategic planning, management and coordination of New Product Approvals.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Essential:
- Key Sponsor product set experience.
- Subscription/Capital Call Facilities.
- NAV / Asset‑backed Facilities.
- Hybrid Facilities.
- FX, interest rate and liquidity solutions tailored for fund clients.
- Understanding of fund waterfalls, capital structures, LPA mechanics and investor capital flow.
- Proven track record originating and structuring transactions with large GPs, private equity, private debt, real estate and infrastructure sponsors.
- Ability to drive conversations at CFO, Treasurer, and COO level.
- Managing and expanding a revenue portfolio; developing long‑term strategic client partnerships.
- Alternative Assets / Sponsor sector experience gained either via banking, consulting or funds management roles.
- Demonstrated strong relationship management skills and ability to build & manage client portfolios, deal teams and strategic initiatives.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Functional & Technical Competencies:
- Experience with structured products, particularly at the fund‑level & asset level finance and Derivatives solutions.
- Strong understanding of Sponsor clients including key industry drivers, capital structures and regulatory environment.
- Good understanding of Project Finance, Leveraged Finance, Securitisation (i.e. fund portco asset level finance).
- Ability to identify market opportunities, gaps in product offering, and areas for innovation.
- Experience owning P&L metrics, pipeline discipline, returns analysis and capital allocation conversations.
- Understanding of the market dynamics across private equity, private debt, infra and secondaries funds.
- Sound Data analysis and presentation creation skills, including ability to coach juniors.
- Lead cross‑functional initiatives (product development, process improvement, risk frameworks).
- Represent fund finance in senior internal forums or strategy groups.
- Fluency in English, written and spoken.
Education / Qualifications: Essential:
- University degree, or equivalent experience in area of expertise.
- 8–15+ years in fund finance, private capital, leveraged finance, or structured lending.
- Hands‑on execution of complex fund financing deals across lifecycle stages.
- Experience working within a large bank, private credit fund or GP.
- A history of product innovation or developing new solutions/platforms.
