About the role
MUBI is growing fast, and we\’re hiring a Senior Backend Engineer (London-based) to help scale and evolve MUBI\’s backend. You\’ll lead key architectural decisions, mentor the team, and tackle our most complex challenges across APIs, streaming, payments, data, authentication and more!
Ruby on Rails expertise is essential, and experience breaking down monoliths into service-oriented architectures is highly valued.

Where you\’ll have impact
- Leading the design and implementation of scalable backend architectures and services across our global platform
- Modernizing our stack, migrating monolithic components to container-based systems (e.g. EKS).
- Architecting and optimizing high-performance APIs serving millions of users globally
- Building distributed systems leveraging ElasticSearch, DynamoDB, Redis, and Sidekiq.
- Overseeing critical systems including billing, payments, and subscription management.
- Mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, driving best practices through code reviews and technical guidance.
- Shaping technical roadmap in collaboration with engineering leadership
What you\’ll bring
Essential Requirements:
- 6+ years in backend development, including 2+ in a senior engineering position.
- Expert-level Ruby on Rails and deep knowledge of its ecosystem.
- Strong experience with AWS services and cloud infrastructure.
- Deep understanding of database design and optimization at scale.
- Track record of leading initiatives and mentoring teams.
- Excellent problem-solving skills; able to navigate ambiguity and influence decisions.
- Strong knowledge of security and authentication systems at scale.
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for continuous learning.
Nice to have
- Experience with video streaming (DASH, HLS, DRM).
- Knowledge of CDN infrastructure and content delivery.
- Background in containerization and orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS).
- Infrastructure as code expertise (Chef, Terraform, etc.).
- High-volume payment processing and billing experience.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
