About the role

We are recruiting for an experienced Technical Author to join a well-established engineering and manufacturing business within the aerospace and defence sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong mechanical engineering background and technical writing experience to produce high-quality technical documentation that supports complex engineering products.

The Role

As a Technical Author, you will be responsible for producing and maintaining technical publications, build plans, acceptance test procedures and other engineering documentation.

You will work closely with engineering and production teams to ensure all documentation is accurate, compliant and produced to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce and update technical publications for engineering products.
  • Research technical information using engineering drawings, production standards and manufacturing processes.
  • Liaise with engineering and other departments to resolve technical queries.
  • Compile new technical manuals and amend existing documentation.
  • Specify illustration requirements for technical publications.
  • Carry out validation and verification of technical documentation using engineering techniques.
  • Proofread documentation before release into quality systems.
  • Produce Illustrated Parts Catalogues in accordance with industry standards.
  • Maintain document configuration control and archiving.
  • Manage workload effectively to meet project deadlines.
  • Generate progress records and maintain accurate time recording.
  • Undertake UK and overseas business travel when required.

Requirements

Essential

  • Previous experience as a Technical Author within an engineering environment.
  • Practical mechanical engineering knowledge.
  • Knowledge of aerospace, defence or similar technical publication standards.
  • Excellent written English with strong grammar and vocabulary.
  • Experience using desktop publishing software such as Frame Maker.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical information.
  • City & Guilds 5360 Part 1 & 2 (Engineering Technical Communication & Authoring) or equivalent qualification.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills.

Desirable

  • Experience with SGML, XML and DITA.
  • Previous experience within the aerospace or defence industry.
  • Experience producing Illustrated Parts Catalogues.
  • Additional Information
  • Security clearance will be required due to MOD requirements.
  • Occasional UK and overseas travel may be required.
  • This role would suit candidates from aerospace, defence or other highly regulated engineering industries.
