MTS Environmental Ltd is a Bristol-based team of specialist Environmental Consultants, Environmental Chemists and Scientists that help clients to improve waste management efficiency. We specialise in sustainable resource and waste management, integrated environmental and waste management systems, environmental permitting, land remediation, soils testing, and the design of innovative recycling technologies and software. Our primary objective is to solve problems with an original approach to allow the effective management of waste and materials.

Due to business growth, we are looking for an Environmental Chemist to provide support to our environmental consultancy work, lab‑based Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) testing and waste classification business. The new Chemist will be based in our Bristol office in Hengrove. The position would suit a dynamic individual with a background in chemistry and competence in project management. Ideally the candidate will possess a knowledge of TPH and UV spectroscopy. A personal interest in and commitment to waste, recycling and other environmental and sustainability issues is expected.

Responsibilities
  • Supporting the team in the delivery of all projects
  • Help run the TPH testing service for clients – managing set up for new users and supporting users through the process
  • Communicate with customers providing an effective interface with them, confidently discussing TPH analysis processes and results
  • Regular testing of soil samples using the QED H1 analyser
  • Liaising with the QED manufacturer
  • Understanding soil chemistry/TPH and applying this to the use of materials in the waste and highways industry
  • Research and development in resource and waste related work
  • Analysing clients’ waste data to ensure it is entered correctly in compliance with the Duty of Care regulation and other appropriate regulations
  • Analyse and summarise waste classification and laboratory analyses and uploading data onto databases and reports
  • Drafting environmental reports and presentations
  • Carry out environmental related desk‑based research for various projects
  • Meet with clients and attend site visits where necessary
  • Develop relationships with clients, seek to acquire new clients and network to promote the MTS TPH testing and waste classification service
  • Help with the development of other IT solutions and applications, such as WasteAccountant.com and MTS TPH Web App
  • Testing software developments and maintaining an efficient customer service through the website TPH testing service web app
  • Opportunity to progress into managing a small team to build up the laboratory and testing service, along with opportunities to be trained as an Environmental Consultant
Requirements
  • BSc (Hons) in Chemistry or relevant science subject
  • Good research skills and lab experience
  • Understanding of soil chemistry and designing remediation strategies
  • Excellent data research and analytical skills, including the ability to work with and manipulate large datasets
  • Excellent IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Office
  • A methodical and rigorous approach to work, with a high level of attention to detail
  • A commitment to meeting client and business requirements – committed to completing sample testing within 24 hours of receipt
  • Comprehensive knowledge of using and interpreting UV spectroscopy results
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including experience in writing technical reports
  • Proven organisational skills and able to work in a calm, logical way to deliver tasks efficiently
  • The ability to think creatively and independently
  • Solutions focused and driven to find and fix problems in existing methods
  • An interest in developing a career within the waste and recycling consultancy sector
  • Willing to be office based and work alone when consultants are on site
  • Willingness to learn everything and anything to get jobs completed
  • Experience in chemical analysis and reporting
  • Ability to manage their own time and work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Communication and liaising with customers/regulatory persons
  • Experience in the use of cloud and other software
  • 1‑2 years’ work experience in the waste management sector or related field
  • Driving licence and car
