The Job Purpose Is To:

  • Attain a registered midwifery qualification.
  • Communicate effectively with women and birthing people and their families throughout the preconception, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stages under the supervision of the Registered Midwife (Practice Supervisor/Assessor).
  • Diagnose pregnancy, assess and monitor women holistically throughout the preconception, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stages through the use of a range of assessment methods and reach valid, reliable and comprehensive conclusions under the supervision of the Registered Midwife.
  • Work towards achieving the NMC Standards of proficiency for midwives (2019) as outlined in the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement.
  • Determine and provide programmes of care and support for women and birthing people throughout the childbirth continuum which:
  • are appropriate to the needs, contexts, culture and choices of the women, babies and their families;
  • are made in partnership with women and birthing people;
  • are ethical;
  • are based on best evidence and clinical judgement;
  • involve other practitioners when this will improve health outcomes.
  • Provide seamless care and interventions in partnership with women and people who birth and other care providers which:
    • are appropriate for women's and birthing people's and fetus/baby's assessed needs, context and culture;
    • promote continuing health and well-being;
    • are evidence-based;
    • are consistent with the management of risk;
    • draw on the skills of others to optimise health outcomes and resource use.
  • Refer women and birthing people who would benefit from the skills and knowledge of other individuals:
    • to an individual who is likely to have the requisite skills and experience to assist at the earliest possible time;
    • supported by accurate, legible and complete information which contains the reasoning behind making the referral and describes their needs and preferences.
