Haemoglobinopathy Senior Nurse

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) is looking to fill this role as part of a newly established Haemoglobinopathy team. The team provides elective and emergency red cell exchange services across multiple sites, with full training and supervision available to support professional development within this specialist service.

Who we’re looking for

Experienced, motivated and compassionate Senior Nurses with a strong background in Haemoglobinopathies or Haematology, ideally gained in acute settings such as Emergency Departments (ED), Intensive Care Units (ITU), Renal units, and Haematology inpatient wards or day‑care units.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer specialist apheresis/complex treatment pathways and procedures.
  • Provide and administer blood products in line with Trust policy.
  • Act as a named nurse for a defined group of patients, ensuring safe, high‑quality apheresis care and effective operation of the clinical service.
  • Provide clinical leadership and collaborate with senior nursing and clinical teams to promote high standards of professional practice.
  • Serve as a professional role‑model, delivering evidence‑based care and ongoing specialist training to support the development of others.
  • Assist in the delivery of safe, effective apheresis care focused on improving patient outcomes and experiences.
  • Support and develop specialist apheresis services across the two sites, maintaining essential skills and ensuring compliance with statutory and accreditation requirements (e.g., CQC, NHS Litigation Authority, MHRA).
  • Implement effective pain management for patients experiencing SCD crises and provide compassionate, person‑centred care.
  • Promote effective communication with patients, relatives/carers and other staff as part of the wider haemoglobinopathy team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Registered Nurse with NHS qualification.
  • Experience working in Haemoglobinopathy services or an equivalent haematology specialty.
  • Exposure to acute settings: ED, ITU, Renal units, or inpatient haematology wards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of apheresis procedures and related clinical governance.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development in line with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
