We are hiring for a Prison Nurse in HMP Nottingham. The Prison Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care to individuals in custody. The role involves addressing physical health, mental health, substance misuse, and long-term conditions, while maintaining security, dignity, and equality of care equivalent to that provided in the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Nursing Care
- Deliver high-quality nursing care in accordance with NMC standards and evidence-based practice
- Undertake health assessments, including reception screening and ongoing reviews
- Administer medications safely, including controlled drugs, in line with policy
- Manage and monitor long-term conditions (e.g. diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease)
- Provide wound care, infection control, and health promotion
- Mental Health & Substance Misuse Support
- Identify and support patients with mental health needs, including anxiety, depression, and serious mental illness
- Assist in the management of substance misuse and withdrawal, including alcohol and drug detoxification programmes
- Monitor and elevate concerns relating to self-harm, suicide risk, or acute distress
- Work closely with mental health, substance misuse, and safeguarding teams
- Safeguarding & Risk Management
- Contribute to risk assessments, care planning, and observations
- Recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns, including violence, abuse, or exploitation
- Maintain awareness of security procedures within the prison environment
- Report incidents accurately and in line with prison and healthcare policies
- Multidisciplinary Team Working
- Work collaboratively with GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, pharmacists, HCAs, prison officers, and allied professionals
- Participate in case conferences, MDT meetings, and handovers
- Liaise with external healthcare services to support continuity of care on release
- Documentation & Personal Practice
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records
- Ensure compliance with GDPR, information governance, and Caldicott principles
- Follow clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement processes
- Maintain CPD, mandatory training, and professional registration
- Health Promotion & Equality of Care
- Promote physical and mental wellbeing among the prison population
- Deliver care in line with equality, diversity, and human rights legislation
- Support patients to access healthcare services equivalent to those in the community
