This is a full-time post for a band 5 biomedical scientist in the molecular diagnostic department, within Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services. The position is within a laboratory environment and the post-holder will be expected to participate in the performance of complex practical processes within the department to ensure a high quality service is delivered in a timely manner to all service users. All practices will be performed at a level that enables the department to maintain UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189. The post holder will also be expected to understand and provide support in the maintenance of the quality management system.
JOB SUMMARY
- To participate in the provision of an efficient and cost effective Molecular Diagnostic service within Surrey and Berkshire Pathology Services.
- To prepare samples and perform both routine and complex techniques efficiently and in a conscientious manner with respect to work pressures and quality of the service.
- Perform the initial screening and analysis of diagnostic tests producing complex diagnostic results in order to aid patient treatment and care.
- Participate in the provision of a comprehensive range of scientific and diagnostic services across a range of scientific disciplines.
- Liaise with line manager as part of a team delivering high quality protocol based technical service under the supervision of Registered Biomedical Scientist staff.
- Required to communicate with hospital clinicians, general practitioners, other healthcare professionals, patients and their representatives and commercial suppliers.
KEY RESULT AREAS/MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To be responsible for the timely delivery of molecular diagnostic analyses. In addition, to be responsible for the time management of multiple tasks as described in the job description and to respond to the changing requirements of the laboratory by accommodating additional tasks as required.
- To undertake sample preparation, analysis and recording of results in accordance with approved procedures.
- To have an understanding of the clinical notes on the patient request card in order to determine any subsequent work to be done on the sample; this information can be complex.
- To provide and receive routine clinical information and to respond to clinical inquiries under the direction of a clinical scientist.
- To undertake the specialised techniques used in the department, and to be able to identify all non-routine situations and queries as they arise, and bring these to the attention of a senior member of staff if they cannot be resolved.
- To carry out routine laboratory tasks including DNA/RNA preparation, maintenance of equipment, reagents and chemicals.
- To take part in the daily maintenance of system; this may involve fault finding and corrective action on complex equipment or making a decision to call an engineer.
- To provide, after appropriate training, specialist clinical and technical services following routine and non-routine laboratory procedures, under the management of a clinical scientist.
- To provide provisional interpretation of the quality of the analyses and to initiate any necessary remedial action under the direction of a clinical scientist.
- To comply with all policies and procedures from both Trusts, especially those relating to Health and Safety.
- To undertake such other duties as required, appropriate to the nature of the post.
