Overview
Responsible for the end‑to‑end design and technical delivery of street lighting and related electrical installations for highways, public realm and external environments. The role covers surveys, concept and detailed design, preparation of lighting layouts, cable and feeder pillar designs, and the specification of controls such as photocells, dimming and CMS systems, ensuring all solutions are safe, energy‑efficient and compliant with current standards and regulations. You will work closely with highways, civils and traffic teams, support contractors during installation, testing and commissioning, update as‑built records and asset data, and contribute to long‑term asset management and sustainability objectives through optimised, low‑energy lighting designs.
Responsibilities
- Prepare street lighting and exterior electrical designs, including column layouts, lighting levels, cable sizing, feeder pillars, and controls (CMS, photocells, timers, dimming profiles).
- Produce design calculations, drawings, and specifications using relevant lighting design software and CAD tools.
- Undertake site surveys, condition assessments, and feasibility studies to inform new schemes, upgrades, and LED/energy‑saving projects.
- Ensure designs comply with current standards and legislation (e.g. BS 5489, EN 13201, wiring regulations, CDM, local authority requirements).
- Coordinate with highways, civil, and traffic teams to integrate lighting with wider highway and public realm schemes.
- Provide technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning; respond to design queries and update as‑built information.
Qualifications
- Background in electrical or lighting engineering with experience in street lighting or exterior electrical design.
- Proficient in lighting and electrical design software (e.g. lighting calculation packages and CAD) and able to produce clear drawings and reports.
- Good knowledge of highway contracts, standards, and health and safety requirements for works on the public highway.
- Strong communication skills to work with local authorities, consultants and contractors to explain technical issues clearly.
- Qualified to Level 3 Electrotechnical NVQ or equivalent.
- Hold a valid AM2 qualification.
- Comprehensive knowledge of BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
- Proven competence in Inspection and Testing procedures.
- Up to date with the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations.
- Strong understanding of electrical design principles, lighting controls, and energy-efficient lighting systems.
