We have an exciting opportunity to join our Commercial Department. The successful applicant will report to the Head of Export Trade and will be responsible for the budget and commercial management of the Break Bulk Department, developing business opportunities, increasing the line’s profile in this sector aligned with set P&L for the Department.
The successful applicant will ensure internal and external best working practices, driving the success of the Break Bulk Department.
How you will help us and what you can expect:
- Define, agree, and deliver clear targets focused on the development and growth of the Project Cargo sector within the business.
- Engage proactively with potential and existing customers to generate Break Bulk, Out of Gauge, and standard container opportunities, while promoting MSC’s products and services.
- Identify, validate, and qualify new business opportunities to produce high-quality commercial leads.
- Conduct regular customer visits to maintain strong relationships and drive new client development.
- Represent the business through occasional travel to head office, trade functions, and overseas agent meetings.
- Ensure accurate communication of policies to trade desks, enabling Customer Services teams to execute effectively.
- Perform market analysis, including competitor activity, customer behaviour, and commodity flow trends, to support strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate closely with the Logistics department to ensure equipment availability for customer requirements.
- Maintain accurate commercial records, including agreements, shipment volumes, and revenue delivered to the business.
- Promote and enhance best working practices across the department to support operational excellence.
- Review and streamline the Project Cargo reporting framework, consolidating it into one standardized functional report.
- Manage FMC rate approval processes in line with company and regulatory requirements.
- Lead system improvement efforts, particularly regarding the identification of Out of Format (OOF) and Break Bulk (BBK) cargo within MSC systems.
- Oversee the commercial negotiation of international project tenders globally, with regular reporting and alignment with head office teams.
Skills and experience you’ll bring to us:
- Proven Shipping and Logistics experience whether in a carrier or Freight Forwarding environment.
- Proven experience in Break Bulk Cargo development.
- Proven experience in Out of Gauge and standard container development.
- Knowledge of international legislation pertaining to the safe stowage and handling of Break-Bulk cargoes.
- Operational knowledge and legislation relating to transportation of out of gauge & break-Bulk cargoes on UK roads.
- Global operational knowledge relating to ship planning, break bulk cargoes & terminal operations.
- Proven background securing new business and nurturing/developing existing business.
- Proven experience in handling high-level negotiations.
- Ability to address and resolve day-to-day business issues.
- Excellent communication skills and a continued positive attitude to new business challenges.
- Good numeracy, literacy, and IT skills.
- Good Excel (Intermediate standard – Pivot Tables), Word and PowerPoint skills.
- Ability to demonstrate a professional manner at all times.
- Ability to be flexible and meet strict deadlines.
- A positive “can do” attitude and the ability to think on your feet.
- Experienced leader, able to motivate and drive the team forward, achieving targets mutually set.
