Container Control Manager

Full time, permanent

We are looking for an experienced and proactive operations leader who can manage a fast-paced environment while maintaining a strong focus on planning, accuracy, and performance. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, the ability to analyse data and make informed decisions, and experience leading and developing a team. They will be highly organised, adaptable, and commercially aware, with a proven ability to prioritise workloads, drive operational efficiency, and deliver results in a complex logistics or operational setting. Supervisory or management experience and a passion for continuous improvement are essential.

How you will help us and what you can expect

  • Manage the Container Control team & Global Routing Specialists ensuring a smooth and efficient operation and to deputize for the Logistics Manager.
  • Proactively manage the equipment empty surplus/deficit areas, communicating suggestions to MSC Geneva Logistics, Vessel planners, MSC Port operations and Port Captains.
  • Daily communication with MSC Geneva Logistics informing them of complications prior to vessel departure that may affect shipment of empty equipment providing proactive solutions and data to aid decisions.
  • Build and maintain relationships with all UK terminals and depots ensuring all empty evacuations are met and planned accurately across all Ports throughout the UK and Scotland (both in and out of the UK), challenging them with shipment and usage of ageing and damaged equipment, delivering superior global routing of MSC Container assets.
  • To deal and proactively manage EDI equipment moves, events and errors relating to empty container movements in and out of all UK ports communicating with the logistics team, ports, and ports systems in a timely manner.
  • Weekly review of data and trends relating to equipment forecast vs bookings across all the UK with focus on Scotland.
  • Provide accurate daily reports to MSC Geneva and MSC vessel planning teams to ensure all available empty equipment planned accurately and then communicated to all UK ports/terminals.
  • Ensure accurate and timely daily stock reporting of empty equipment across all UK empty storage locations to ensure full visibility is provided to the UK agency alongside the management and monitoring of off hire and sale containers.
  • Consulting with Third party vessel companies regarding the shipment of empty containers across the UK in line with Import and Export forecasting.
  • Vessel departure and third-party feeder reporting sent to MSC Geneva and final POD.
  • Performance management and personal development plans to be set for the team with regular one to one meetings.
  • Manage the department shared mailbox to ensure all emails are answered within set deadlines.
  • Monthly reconciliation of department finances liaising regularly with Management accountants, depots, ports, and other external suppliers to ensure accurate reporting of department spend.
  • Administer clerical tasks and procedures accurately and efficiently, ensuring all procedures and documents are up to date and stored in iGrafx.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven ability to forward plan while being able to manage high priority changes in an evolving environment.
  • Ability to address and resolve day to day business issues with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail within commercially sensitive deadlines.
  • Good numeracy, literacy, and IT skills, including Microsoft skills (Outlook, Excel/ Destin8/OVA/Paris).
  • Be able to demonstrate a professional, positive, and flexible attitude to business changes at all times.
  • Must remain focused on prioritisation of day-to-day emails and tasks.
  • Excellent communication with senior internal stakeholders.
  • The ability to support and motivate others.
  • Supervisory or team leader experience would be advantageous.
