Our Catastrophe Research team plays a central role in how MS Amlin understands and manages catastrophe risk.

Validating the latest catastrophe models is core to the role, but the work goes much further.

We build our own tools and methods, carry out original research, publish and present our findings externally, and continually improve how catastrophe risk is represented across the business.

We are outcomes focused and always looking for opportunities to make a real difference beyond business as usual.

Above all, we are highly collaborative, working closely with teams right across the business, among them underwriting, risk, capital modelling, pricing, outward reinsurance, portfolio management, claims and reserving, which gives this role exceptional breadth and a rare insight into how a Lloyd's syndicate operates.

We are stronger together because of our common interests and rich differences. You may be the strength we didn't know we needed.

About The Job

While there is rarely a typical day, here's a snapshot of some of the key parts of the job:

  • Lead projects to validate catastrophe models, including designing testing plans, undertaking scientific analysis, producing required regulatory documentation, and communicating the results to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist the Head of Catastrophe Research in the development of MS Amlin's View of Risk, including model adjustments where required.
  • Undertake innovative research projects to assist with MS Amlin's understanding and management of catastrophe risk, for example climate change and non-modelled perils.
  • Produce catastrophe risk governance documentation and research briefings.
  • Provide natural catastrophe risk expertise to internal stakeholders as required, for example underwriters, exposure management and catastrophe modellers.
  • Represent MS Amlin at external events and committees, such as conferences and the Lighthill Risk Network, through participation in round tables, forums and presentations.
  • Keep pace with the latest industry trends and developments in natural hazards research.
  • Contribute to event response efforts by delivering real-time insights, conducting loss assessments and coordinating across teams.

In addition to your key responsibilities, you will be expected to

  • Conduct your role in accordance with the company's Business Ethics policy and ensure compliance with relevant risk, regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Share scientific and technical knowledge across the team and the wider business.
  • Act as an ambassador of our company, raising our profile in the market and proactively strengthening our reputation.
  • What You'll Need
  • Demonstrable research experience, a Ph D or similar, in a field relevant to natural catastrophe risk, with a preference for expertise in meteorology and atmospheric science, hydrology and flood risk, or wildfire risk.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including experience of working with large data sets, programming such as Python, and spatial visualisation such as QGIS.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication, particularly the ability to convey complex scientific ideas to a non-technical audience.
  • Critical thinking to form scientific and business judgements.
  • The ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
  • Prior experience of using or validating catastrophe models, such as Moody's RMS, would be advantageous.
  • A track record of developing natural hazard models in the insurance industry or academia, and a strong statistical background, would also be advantageous.
  • Hybrid Working

At MS Amlin we operate a hybrid working model to empower our people with flexibility to blend where they work.

We value collaboration and believe that we work better together, our teams typically do 3 days a week in the office.
