About MSALABS:

MSALABS is a global provider of geochemical laboratory services for the exploration and mining industries. We deliver a complete range of analytical services from greenfields exploration through to mine closure, including laboratory management, onsite services, and sample preparation.

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Manager overseeing the day-to-day operations, ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the laboratory. This role includes managing staff, maintaining quality standards, and implementing improvements to enhance operational performance. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and technical skills, ensuring compliance with safety and quality protocols while driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Create client jobs in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Review analytical reports for accuracy and perform necessary quality control checks
  • Monitor ongoing jobs and investigate any overdue tasks
  • Ensure proper functionality of laboratory equipment and coordinate repairs as needed
  • Maintain adequate inventory of consumables and place orders as required
  • Implement quality control procedures and maintain quality documentation
  • Ensure laboratory policies are effectively communicated and enforced among staff
  • Provide technical guidance to coordinators, analysts, and operators
  • Conduct laboratory testing in accordance with documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Identify and implement cost-saving measures and efficiency improvements
  • Monitor staffing levels and recommend adjustments as necessary
  • Support laboratory staff to maintain morale and a productive working environment
  • Ensure all activities comply with current health and safety regulations
  • Stay updated on laboratory developments and client needs to identify growth opportunities
  • Participate in drafting new SOPs and policies and assist in developing and validating test methods
  • Participate in research projects aimed at improving gold extraction methods
  • Collaborate with external research institutions to stay updated on advancements in analytical techniques
  • Approve/disapprove sample analysis procedures and provide the final reports to the clients in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Approve/disapprove staff timesheets, vacations, absences, and purchase orders in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that laboratory procedures are documented in the form of SOPs, properly taught to the laboratory staff, adhered to by staff and laboratory personnel, and enforced by means of the company's reprimand procedure.
  • Review/evaluate prospective candidates for hire, professionalism and knowledge of staff and laboratory personnel, and laboratory staff performance and salary.
  • All staff have the general authorities (as indicated by the training matrix, which shows competence and authorization) to refuse any unsafe work, and to participate in and contribute to all HSEC activities and initiatives.
  • To perform duties as trained and authorized in the Training matrix (MSA-QUA-F027.XXX).

Training and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science, preferably with a major in Chemistry or a related

discipline

  • Strong leadership abilities, including effective planning and organizational skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work well under pressure
  • Induction on company policies and procedures.
  • ISO17025 systems awareness, internal auditing and method validation where applicable.

Experience Required

  • 5-10 years of laboratory experience.
  • Minimum 2 years as a supervisor/manager.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be physically fit to meet the job’s inherent requirements
  • Ability and willingness to travel, and work site hours/days when required
