We are looking for a Web Designer to join MRS Digital on a 12-month maternity cover contract. This role is focused on designing engaging, effective websites with a strong emphasis on user experience, conversion-focused thinking and modern digital design best practice.

You will work closely with our developers, marketers and content team to create high-quality website designs for a range of ambitious clients. This is a strong fit for someone who enjoys solving design problems, thinking through user journeys and creating polished, well-structured designs for WordPress websites, particularly within Gutenberg-based builds.

About the role of the Web Designer

This is primarily a design-led role. You will be responsible for taking briefs and turning them into thoughtful wireframes, page designs and user-focused digital experiences that are ready to be built by our development team. You should be confident designing for the web, presenting ideas clearly, and considering usability, layout, hierarchy, accessibility and conversion throughout the design process. Experience designing with WordPress and an understanding of Gutenberg is important, as many of the websites we create are built on that platform.

Key responsibilities of the Web Designer

  • Design bespoke website concepts and page layouts for mainly WordPress-based projects
  • Create wireframes, mock-ups and high-fidelity design flats aligned to project briefs
  • Apply UX thinking to page structure, content hierarchy, navigation and conversion journeys
  • Design user-focused interfaces that balance creativity with clarity, accessibility and performance
  • Work closely with developers to ensure designs are practical, scalable and well translated into build
  • Make design and content updates within CMS platforms, primarily WordPress and Gutenberg
  • Support the design of landing pages and ongoing improvements for live websites
  • Collaborate with internal teams including development, content, SEO and marketing
  • Contribute design ideas for campaign assets, digital graphics and supporting website visuals where needed
  • Help estimate design time internally and manage workload across multiple projects
  • Respond to client feedback and implement design revisions clearly and efficiently
  • Share ideas and contribute to design best practice across the team

Essential skills and experience required for the Web Designer

  • Experience in a web design or digital design role
  • Strong portfolio showing website design, UX thinking and digital layout work
  • Good understanding of user experience principles, page hierarchy and conversion-led design
  • Experience designing for WordPress websites
  • Good working knowledge of Gutenberg and designing within its practical constraints
  • Strong skills in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Ability to produce wireframes, polished mock-ups and presentation-ready design concepts
  • Understanding of typography, spacing, layout and digital design best practice
  • Confidence collaborating with developers and non-design stakeholders
  • Ability to manage feedback, prioritise work and communicate clearly internally and with clients

Desirable skills for the Web Designer

  • Experience making content and layout updates directly in WordPress
  • Familiarity with landing page platforms such as Unbounce
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Understanding of responsive implementation and front-end design constraints
  • Experience designing for paid media, campaign landing pages or wider digital marketing activity
  • Experience creating infographics, social graphics or other digital brand assets
  • Basic knowledge of JavaScript or Bootstrap
  • Illustration skills or experience creating bespoke assets

What success looks like in this role

  • You create clear, effective and visually strong web designs that are grounded in user needs
  • You understand how to design for WordPress and Gutenberg without treating design in isolation
  • You work well with developers and can hand over designs in a way that supports efficient delivery
  • You are comfortable improving existing websites as well as designing new ones
  • You bring a thoughtful, practical approach to digital design rather than just producing visuals

Benefits

  • Company pension
  • Free parking
  • Gym membership
  • Health and well-being programme
  • On-site parking
  • Sick pay
