Underwriting Ontologist - Claims, Insurance - Permanent, Hybrid - London

A large global organisation are seeking an experienced Underwriting Ontologist with strong Insurance domain expertise across Underwriting and Claims to design, develop, and support enterprise-grade ontology and semantic data solutions supporting underwriting operations, claims management, policy administration and enterprise knowledge management initiatives.

This position will be highly hands-on, focused on ontology engineering, semantic modelling, knowledge graph development and integration of insurance data domains across business and technology platforms.

You will work closely with Underwriting, Claims, Data, Architecture and AI stakeholders to ensure scalable, governed and business-aligned ontology solutions.

This will be a permanent position, with the ideal candidate residing in London, UK.

This position can be worked remotely, hybrid or on an on-site basis.

Key Responsibilities

Ontology Engineering & Semantic Modelling

  • Design and develop insurance ontologies covering Underwriting, Claims, Policies, Risk, Reinsurance, Broker, and Customer data.
  • Build and maintain semantic models, taxonomies and knowledge graphs using OWL, RDF and SPARQL.
  • Map source data to ontology models and document modelling decisions.
  • Define business vocabularies, metadata standards and reusable ontology frameworks.

Integration & Delivery

  • Integrate ontology models with enterprise systems, APIs, and data platforms.
  • Translate underwriting and claims requirements into semantic models.
  • Work closely with business and technical stakeholders, communicating ontology concepts in clear business language.
  • Support AI, analytics, and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Governance & Support
  • Define ontology standards, naming conventions and governance.
  • Maintain ontology documentation, including clear rdf definitions.
  • Support testing, deployments, issue resolution and continuous improvements.

Key Skills Required

  • 4+ years hands-on ontology engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of OWL 2, RDF, RDFS, SPARQL and semantic modelling.
  • Experience with Knowledge Graphs, graph databases and linked data.
  • Experience with JSON-LD (preferred), Turtle or RDF/XML.
  • Experience mapping source data schemas to ontology models.
  • Familiarity with FIBO, gist, BFO, PROV-O or Dublin Core.
  • Experience integrating ontology solutions with APIs and enterprise data platforms.
  • Git/Git Hub and CI/CD experience.
  • Protégé, Stardog, Top Braid, Graph DB or Pool Party.
  • Insurance experience across Underwriting, Claims or Policy Administration.
  • Knowledge of Commercial, Consumer or Specialty Insurance.
  • Experience with FIBO/ACORD data standards is highly desirable.
