Yard Operative/ Runner
Overview
We are seeking a dependable and proactive Yard Operative to support the day-to-day operations of our busy drainage and utilities business. This role is responsible for ensuring all vehicles, plant, drainage equipment, and specialist safety equipment are maintained, organised, and ready for deployment. The successful candidate will play a key role in keeping the yard running efficiently while maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and stock control.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate forklifts safely to load, unload, and move equipment, materials, and vehicles around the yard.
- Tow trailers and position plant and specialist drainage equipment safely.
- Prepare drainage vehicles and equipment for daily operations.
- Clean, inspect, and maintain drainage equipment, including jetting hoses, CCTV survey systems, pumps, generators, and ancillary equipment.
- Inspect confined space and safety equipment to ensure it is clean, serviceable, and compliant before issue.
- Keep accurate records of equipment movements, inspections, servicing schedules, defects, and repairs.
- Monitor stock levels of consumables, PPE, and drainage supplies, reporting shortages when required.
- Carry out routine checks on company vehicles and plant, reporting any defects immediately.
- Assist with loading and unloading deliveries from suppliers and preparing equipment for collection by engineers.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe yard, workshop, and storage areas.
- Ensure waste materials are stored and disposed of correctly in line with environmental regulations.
- Support engineers and operational staff by ensuring equipment is available, prepared, and fit for purpose.
- Follow all company health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Experience operating forklifts (valid forklift licence preferred).
- Experience towing trailers and manoeuvring equipment safely.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and equipment logs.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Flexible approach to working hours to meet operational requirements.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Previous experience within the drainage, utilities, construction, or plant hire industry.
- Knowledge of high-pressure water jetting equipment and CCTV survey systems.
- Experience handling confined space equipment, gas monitors, tripods, winches, and breathing apparatus.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to carry out minor repairs and maintenance.
- Telehandler or plant machinery experience.
- First Aid, Manual Handling, or Health & Safety qualifications.
