Technology Risk Lawyer - AI & Emerging Technology - Global Law Firm - London

We are working with a leading global law firm seeking a Technology Risk Lawyer to advise the firm on its own use of AI and emerging technology. This is a newly created in-house role sitting alongside the firm's risk function, focused not on advising clients on their obligations but on the firm's own decisions: which tools it can safely deploy, on what terms, and with what safeguards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise the firm on the governance, risk and regulatory aspects of adopting AI and other emerging technologies.
  • Assess new tools and vendor solutions ahead of deployment, identifying risks and agreeing mitigations before go-live.
  • Design and maintain the firm's AI governance framework, including intake and review processes, impact assessments, escalation routes and acceptable use policies.
  • Advise on confidentiality, client consent, privilege and professional obligations where client data meets new technology.
  • Review and advise on the contractual layer beneath deployment, including supplier, licensing and data protection arrangements.
  • Monitor developments under the EU AI Act and related digital regulation, and translate them into practical internal guidance.
  • Partner with IT, information security, procurement, knowledge and business services teams on technology initiatives across the firm.
  • Design and deliver training to build AI literacy among lawyers and business services staff.

Key Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer with experience in AI governance, data protection or technology risk, gained in private practice, in-house, or on secondment.
  • Practical experience of building governance artefacts - frameworks, impact assessments, acceptable use policies, review processes - rather than purely advisory work.
  • Working knowledge of the EU AI Act, UK and EU data protection law, and the wider digital regulatory landscape.
  • Genuine interest in how the technology works, not only how it is regulated. Legal technology, product development or innovation programme experience is an advantage.
  • Comfortable reaching a decision and defending it to senior stakeholders, rather than presenting a list of risks.
  • Able to explain technical concepts clearly to a non-technical audience.

Take the Next Step:

This is a rare opportunity to shape how a major international firm governs its own adoption of AI, at a point where very few firms have built this function. No billable hours target.
