The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow in physical oceanography to pursue research on the dynamics of turbulent mixing over mid ocean ridges. The position will focus on the analysis of a range of novel measurements of small- and finescale processes collected over the Mid Atlantic Ridge in the subtropical North Atlantic within the RidgeMix consortium. These observations will be conducted by a mooring array deployed for 1 year in the region, and by a dedicated research expedition in May – July 2016. They will involve a suite of innovative techniques, including the measurement of the rate of turbulent dissipation using ocean microstructure gliders.

The successful applicant will work as part of a team examining the physical processes relevant to the dynamics of turbulent mixing over mid ocean ridges and their impact on the vertical transport of nutrients and carbon in subtropical gyres. The RidgeMix project aims to solve the longstanding problem of how phytoplankton in these oligotrophic regions are supplied with nutrients. The RidgeMix group includes an active sea-going team, numerical modellers and theoreticians. The NOCS RidgeMix project team will work closely with scientists at project partner institutions both in the UK and the USA.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in physical oceanography (or a related field) with experience in the interpretation of oceanographic observations.
  • Good knowledge of ocean dynamics and strong quantitative and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals.
