MPI are looking for an ongoing Mechanical Cleaner / PCF cleaner, for our client based in Kempston. Ongoing contract Monday – Friday. Rates – to be discussed based on experience (Potential travel to client sites, including overnight stays on occasion, costs would be covered).

Overview

The purpose of this role is to ensure pile cloth filtration units are kept clean, functional, and efficient, supporting reliable tertiary treatment performance and helping the site meet Environment Agency discharge standards. The Pile Cloth Filter Cleaner is responsible for the routine cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of pile cloth filtration units used within municipal wastewater treatment works. The role supports the reliable operation of tertiary treatment processes by ensuring filters remain clear, effective, and fully compliant with regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Filter Cleaning & Routine Maintenance
    • Clean pile cloth filter panels using manual and mechanical methods, including brushing, washing, and chemical treatments.
    • Remove rags, screenings, sludge and debris that could impact filtration performance.
    • Inspect filter cloths for wear, damage, fouling or reduced flow.
    • Replace damaged cloths or panels following site procedures and manufacturer guidance.
    • Carry out routine checks on filter rotation, wash cycles and backwash performance.
  • Operational Support
    • Support technicians with the setup, shutdown and monitoring of pile cloth filtration systems.
    • Identify and report flow restrictions, increased headloss or abnormal filter performance.
    • Help maintain efficient filter operation to ensure compliance with site permit standards.
  • Quality & Compliance
    • Keep clear and accurate records of cleaning, inspections and repairs.
    • Work in accordance with UK water industry standards and Environment Agency permit requirements.
    • Ensure cleaned filters meet operational and environmental performance criteria.
  • Equipment Handling
    • Safely operate cleaning tools, wash systems, lifting equipment and hand tools.
    • Handle and store chemicals correctly in line with COSHH.
    • Maintain good housekeeping around all filter and wash-down areas.
  • Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities
    • Follow all site safety procedures and comply with PUWER, COSHH and Health & Safety at Work legislation.
    • Use appropriate PPE at all times.
    • Dispose of waste materials responsibly and in line with environmental requirements.
    • Work safely around open water, moving machinery and restricted-access areas.

Practical experience in physical or mechanical maintenance tasks. Understanding of wastewater processes or willingness to learn. Good attention to detail when inspecting filter media and identifying faults. Ability to follow safety procedures and work within a team.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a wastewater treatment works or within the UK water industry.
  • Knowledge of tertiary treatment systems such as disc filters, pile cloth filters, or sand filters.
  • Basic mechanical skills or maintenance background.

Physical Requirements

  • Comfortable with manual handling tasks (typically up to 20–25 kg).
  • Able to work in wet, odorous, or outdoor environments typical of wastewater sites.
  • Standing, bending, and moving between equipment for extended periods.

  • Confined Space training
