MPA Recruitment is delighted to be recruiting a Band 4 Pharmacy Technician to join the Healthcare in Prison team at HMP Maghaberry. The post holder will work as an effective member of the Healthcare in Prison Pharmacy team providing comprehensive Medicines Management and dispensing services.

Location & Details: Maghaberry Prison. Hours: 37.5 HPW – Mon‑Fri, 9am‑5pm. Salary: £14.06 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the provision of all aspects of the dispensary services to Healthcare in Prison under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Dispense prescriptions for patients using the pharmacy computer system.
  • Participate in the treatment room pharmacy service including monitoring stock usage and liaising with the Primary Care nurse regarding stock control.
  • Responsible for monitoring fridge temperatures and fridge logs, taking appropriate action to ensure the cold chain is maintained.
  • Perform duties in accordance with the department’s safe systems of work and procedures including the use of equipment and machines, handling of chemicals, lifting and handling.
  • Maintain equipment and dispensing areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Process returns from treatment rooms and ensure they are safe for reuse.
  • Ensure the safe disposal of medication deemed unsuitable for reuse.
  • Issue self‑administration medication to patients, providing medication counselling where appropriate.
  • Assist nursing staff with administration of Controlled Drugs and the maintenance of Controlled Drug registers and the Controlled Drug Cabinet.
  • Ensure that appropriate stock levels of medications and pharmacy items are available in each treatment room by providing efficient top‑up services and ensuring that all daily requisitions are processed.
  • Assist relevant pharmacy personnel in the optimisation of pharmaceutical product use by monitoring stock levels, managing non‑stock items, checking expiry dates and processing returns.
  • Make appropriate entries on patients' computerised medical records (EMIS system) regarding medication concerns.
  • Responsible for the re‑ordering of patients' repeat medications ensuring continuity of supply at all times.
  • Responsible for regular monitoring of self‑administration medications to ensure that patients are not abusing/misusing their medication.

Essential Criteria:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a Student Pharmacy Technician, or equivalent, for a minimum of 14 hours per week.
  • BTEC and NVQ3 in Pharmacy Services, or equivalent.

Equivalent Knowledge‑Based Qualifications Include:

  • City and Guilds Level 3 Cert In Pharmacy Services (100/5845/X)
  • SQA level 3 Cert in Pharmacy Services (G753 04 or GA6P46)
  • NPA Level 3 Underpinning knowledge programme
  • Buttercups Level 3 knowledge‑based programme
  • Dispensing Certificate of the Royal Army Medical Corps or the Royal Air Force
  • NPA 2‑year Dispensing Technicians correspondence course completed prior to 1998
  • Boots 2‑year dispenser training course completed prior to 1993
  • Boots 1 year dispenser training course completed after 1993 but before March 2005 plus accredited top‑up training module plus assessment of competence

Equivalent NVQ3 Qualifications Include:

  • City and Guilds NVQ3 Pharmacy services (100/2201/6 or 500/0576/6)
  • Edexcel NVQ3 Pharmacy services (100/2615/0 or 500/9578/X)
  • SQA Level 3 Pharmacy Services (G759 23 or GA08 23)

Experience:

  • Dispensing experience.
  • Medicine management.
  • Pharmacy technician qualification.
  • Controlled drugs experience.
