We would like to invite you to join our team at Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis situated centrally in the heart of Edinburgh. We are looking for a Kitchen Assistant/Housekeeper. This is a varied role, which would suit someone who is flexible, forward-thinking, and loves each day to be different.
The nursery is a 65-place setting located in a single-storey building in the former Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital, backing onto Holyrood Park in central Edinburgh. The nursery is a short 10-minute walk from Waverley Station, with local bus routes also nearby. There is also parking on site.
Purpose of the role:
- Provide support to the Chef in the preparation of meals and snacks, including basic food preparation, dishwashing, and maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic kitchen environment.
- Light housekeeping duties to create a clean and orderly environment for our families and staff.
- Work in collaboration with others and take responsibility for working in line with regulatory requirements and BH policies and procedures.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Support the Chef in the day-to-day running of the kitchen, including washing dishes, cleaning equipment, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
- Ensure the kitchen environment is kept clean, safe, and well organised at all times while supporting the smooth operation of meal service.
- Keep the Nursery clean and safe for the children, staff, and families.
- Encourage and model appropriate behaviour in a child environment, always being professional and adhering to our Heart Principles.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene of the children’s bathroom and nappy change areas throughout the day.
- Carry out daily laundry duties as required.
- Respond appropriately to issues requiring confidentiality, being aware of personal information regarding children.
- Support, promote, and implement policies and procedures.
- Work in co-operation and partnership with the Nursery team, providing high standards of cleaning to ensure the smooth running of the nursery.
- Be prepared to help where needed, including undertaking certain domestic tasks within the nursery, e.g., supporting over mealtimes and cleaning of equipment.
- Ensure products and materials are appropriate for a nursery environment and stored and used in line with COSHH guidelines.
- Take reasonable care of yourself and others and comply with company Health and Safety guidelines.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach using your initiative and showing resilience to take responsibility for getting things done.
What we’re looking for:
- Previous experience of cleaning within a domestic or commercial property, preferably within a nursery or care home setting.
- Food Safety CIEH L2 or above (or equivalent) – this must be passed on day 1 in post.
- Sound knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety requirements.
- Great communication skills, with colleagues, children, and parents.
