About the Role
Working with relevant departments and reporting to the Engineering Director, the Principal Design Engineer will provide expert product design leadership, develop and detail new designs, and create detailed prototype testing plans. The role will lead design projects and ensure specified solutions are implemented on schedule and within budget.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and documentation of design processes for company products.
- Ensure accuracy and successful delivery of product design projects, covering definition, design phase, concessions, and production permits.
- Design, prototype, assess, and review mechanical components and assemblies.
- Provide support in product acceptance, testing, and validation activities.
- Participate in requirements and design review meetings.
- Undertake analysis of components, assemblies and systems, including manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Oversee and participate in prototyping activities.
- Support design, manufacturing and shop‑floor activity as required.
- Provide technical support for the company's product range across manufacturing, development and procurement.
- Offer engineering support for material selection during design and development, including test development to verify performance.
- Provide technical assistance to internal and external customers, visiting customer sites as needed.
- Support cross‑functional team in problem solving and troubleshooting.
- Maintain technical knowledge and pursue ongoing professional development.
- Work with the engineering team to oversee warranty and product return reviews.
- Mentor, coach and develop engineering talent.
- Undertake any reasonable duties required at manager’s discretion.
About You
Candidate must have a degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, ideally with design experience in heavy equipment.
Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
- Competent user of 3D solid modeling CAD, preferably Pro‑Engineer, and familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
- Good technical expertise in mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Diligent approach to design and development processes.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation and hand calculations for design analysis.
- Understanding of equipment applications and expected performance.
- Creativity and innovative thinking.
- Experience with Oracle TMS is a plus.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken.
- Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Can do attitude and ability to work with a multi‑functional team.
- Ability to work with others to meet deadlines, assess workload and commit to realistic timelines.
- Capability to evaluate multiple design alternatives when no clear best choice is evident.
- Investigate root cause of machinery nonperformance.
- Identify technical and commercial risks with proposed product changes or new products.
Location & Travel
The position will be based at either Campsie or Farlough facility. Occasional national and international travel required.
