This is a full-time, on-site role for an experienced Expatriate General Manager, who will be based in Guyana and Suriname. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing strategic, operational and commercial leadership across major civil engineering projects and business units within Guyana and Suriname. The role oversees end-to-end delivery of complex infrastructure works, ensuring projects are executed safely, on time, within budget, and in line with contractual and regulatory requirements.

Key requirements include driving business growth, managing profit and loss, leading multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining strong relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders. The General Manager ensures compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards while promoting a high-performance culture aligned with the Company’s global objectives.

The role requires extensive experience in large-scale civil engineering, strong commercial acumen, proven leadership capability, and the ability to operate effectively across international markets and diverse project environments.

Responsibilities

  • Actively support development of new business opportunities, building relationships with appropriate ministerial and other government officials, senior personnel in international and local construction companies and community leaders.
  • Manage the work tendering process, liaising with corporate and specialist colleagues and co-ordinating bid team activities.
  • Deliver the business plan – utilising resources effectively to meet agreed sales, customer service, profit, revenue, cash and SHEQ targets.
  • Provide effective leadership and direction, building, developing and motivating a strong and highly empowered management / technical team and workforce.
  • Develop and maintain a good and safe working environment, with international standard operational practices, conditions of work and accommodation.
  • Ensure adherence to appropriate company processes and standards.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Civil Engineer MICE or Equivalent
  • BSC Eng in Civil Engineering

Essential Experience

  • Deep construction industry knowledge with a detailed understanding of Road, Airport and Port Operations.
  • Excellent leadership, management, communication, influencing and networking skills.
  • Deep commercial, financial and project management understanding.
  • Deep knowledge of business development, bidding and client management.

Desirable Experience

  • Detailed understanding of operating in the Americas and Caribbean, including:
  • Managing mixed cultures and scarce resources
  • Ministries and Industry Sectors
  • Registrations and Certificates to work
  • Formal legal framework and informal role of local chiefs etc
  • General terms and conditions, employment regulations, sector agreements and unions
  • The employment of foreign workers
  • Risks to health and security and health provision
  • Local procurement practices and issues
