Overview

As a Forensic Custody Healthcare Professional, you will deliver quality healthcare to people detained in police custody, many with complex physical, mental health, substance misuse or safeguarding needs.

Working autonomously in a fast-paced environment, you will assess, treat and support detainees while ensuring their safety.

This unique role combines clinical practice, safeguarding and forensic healthcare.

No two shifts are the same.

You will assess fitness for detention, interview, charge and release, manage acute presentations, respond to emergencies and provide advice to custody teams and partner agencies.

Your clinical judgement will support safe decision‑making and outcomes for vulnerable individuals.

You will also undertake specialist forensic duties, including injury assessment, evidential sample collection, and maintaining accurate clinical and legal records.

Working with police, NHS and partner agencies, you will support detainee care in custody and on release.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical and capacity assessments.
  • Managing acute healthcare needs and emergencies.
  • Supporting mental health, substance misuse and safeguarding needs.
  • Collecting and documenting forensic evidence.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical and evidential records.
  • Working collaboratively with police, NHS and partner agencies.
  • Attending hospital blood procedures under the Road Traffic Act.
  • Providing statements and court attendance when required.

Qualifications

Are you a Registered Nurse or Paramedic with at least 3 years' post-registration experience in an acute or urgent care setting and are looking for a role with purpose, independence and impact?

Role Overview

We are seeking Registered Nurses and Paramedics to join us as Forensic Custody Healthcare Professionals.

This is an opportunity to step beyond traditional healthcare settings into a rewarding role offering autonomy, variety & structured development.

Working alongside police and criminal justice partners, you'll assess, treat & support detainees, using your clinical expertise to safeguard welfare and influence important decisions.

No forensic or custody experience is required.

We provide accredited training, support & a structured development programme to help you succeed in this specialist field.

A minimum of one shift per month.

We operate 24x7 shifts or 06:45-19:00 and 18:45-07:00, all shifts include paid breaks.

The main place of work will be Workington Custody Suite.
