We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation to delivering completed infrastructure and helping maintain it, our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of the role

We are looking for a Senior Rail Operations Consultant to join our growing team. This role spans projects from Northern Powerhouse Rail and East West Rail, to supporting light rail in the United States, and planning future rail networks in the Republic of Ireland. The consultant will collaborate across the Mott MacDonald group and with international partners to deliver a diverse project portfolio. Responsibilities include analysis using systems such as Railsys and ATTUne, and working with engineering design teams to integrate operational requirements, ensuring project success. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to winning bids and support business development activities.

Candidate specification

Essential

  • Expertise in rail operational planning, timetable production, capacity analysis, and performance modelling.
  • An appreciation of wider rail engineering disciplines for a whole system approach.
  • Experienced user of RailSys modelling tool in all three modules: infrastructure, timetable and evaluation.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex data and drive informed decision-making.
  • Knowledge of train planning software tools such as ATTUne, TPS or similar.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, effectively communicating modelling results to diverse audiences.
  • Experience of engaging with external stakeholders and interfacing with clients.

Desirable

  • Experience in other rail operations modelling tools such as Treno, OpenTrack, and RTC.
  • Experience in rolling stock and train crew diagramming.
  • Strategic operational knowledge covering concepts of operations, train crew strategies, and network access.
  • Experience across metro, light-rail, and tram-train transport modes.
  • International experience with knowledge of transport markets across the Republic of Ireland, North America, Australasia, and the Middle East.
