Senior Associate Town Planner – Mott MacDonald

Overview Of Role
We are seeking an Associate Town Planner to join our expanding town planning team, based at our Birmingham office. The role supports the delivery of major projects across multiple sectors including rail, defence, energy generation, water infrastructure, climate resilience, education, health, housing, employment, mixed‑use regeneration and waste‑focused schemes. You will lead and grow the Midlands Planning Team, develop relationships across the business and become a key link within the city region.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and work as part of the planning team to deliver a range of planning projects, including potentially project‑managing other disciplines within a multidisciplinary team.
- Write and review planning deliverables to a very high standard, including high‑level options appraisals, planning applications, Marine Licensing, Environmental Permitting, Energy Consents, TWAOs or DCOs, and planning policy preparation.
- Project‑manage and coordinate the preparation of planning applications.
- Liaise with Local Planning Authorities and Statutory Consultees to ensure applications are registered and determined timely.
- Prepare inputs and possibly lead bids for new work.
- Support junior staff in their chartership and professional development.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Degree and/or Masters in Town Planning.
- Extensive experience across a range of consenting types, including the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, Development Consent Orders and Transport & Works Act Orders.
- Chartered Member of the RTPI.
- Experience preparing and submitting planning applications, drafting reports, feasibility studies, masterplans and regeneration strategies.
- Experience working with a range of client bodies, both private and public sector.
- Previous active role in the delivery of varied infrastructure, regeneration and environmental projects.
- Experience overseeing or project‑managing multidisciplinary projects.
- Experience supporting and mentoring junior team members.
- Experience in financial accountability and delivering projects within budget.
