About the business unit

The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors: Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Overview of the role

We are seeking a Principal – Building Services Mechanical Engineer to lead, grow and inspire our multidisciplinary Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) team. This role is ideally based in our London office, with collaboration across our regional teams in Croydon, Brighton and Bristol, alongside opportunities to contribute to national and international projects. You will play a key role in both winning and delivering major projects across diverse sectors, including:

Candidates will be expected to:

  • Deliver mechanical design for major projects from concept through to detailed design
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring high-quality service delivery
  • Contribute to business development, including work-winning and bid leadership
  • Champion innovation, sustainability, and best practice in engineering design
  • Support to senior managers running the commercial and contractual side of projects
  • Work autonomously within a team carrying out building services projects
  • Hold Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IMechE, CIBSE, or equivalent professional body
  • Have proven experience delivering projects within the built environment with sustainable solutions
  • Possess extensive MEP design experience across concept and detailed design stages
  • Demonstrate ability to lead mechanical teams and coordinate with other disciplines
  • Lead Mechanical elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects
  • Deliver coordinated MEP 3D design models
  • Have a track record in building services Mechanical engineering design and specification using relevant industry software (NBS Create, IES, and REVIT etc)
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design
  • Have experience in sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, aviation, rail, residential or data centres
  • Possess knowledge of the London market and broader UK
  • Have experience in work-winning and bid support
  • Be familiar with digital engineering tools and emerging technologies
  • Have experience of training graduates/Early Career Professionals (ECP)
  • Drive profitability of projects, monitoring against budget, reacting and anticipating potential problems and communicating in line with client expectations
