The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland's water and wastewater challenges. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations, preventing urban flooding, and improving the health of our rivers and coastal environments. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design.
The Asset Management and Infrastructure Planning team is one of five sub-sectors within our Water Utilities Division, which employs around 350 people across the UK. We support water companies and other infrastructure providers in the UK and internationally across the following workstreams:
- Operational Advisory – providing technical and strategic support to water company operational teams
- Water resource investment planning
- Wastewater and bioresources investment planning
- Strategic asset management and business planning
- Integrated systems management
- Carbon and net zero appraisal and strategic planning
- Data analytics and decision support tools
- Technical assurance of statutory regulatory submissions such as annual performance reporting, business cases and business plans, long-term strategic plans, operational performance and deliverables
- Contract’s appraisal (NEC, PPP)
Following recent successes in securing framework appointments, we are expanding our Operational Advisory team. As an Operational Advisory Specialist, you will support water company clients in achieving their operational objectives across water and wastewater services. You will help to develop strategic and tactical plans, support implementation, and lead change and performance-improvement initiatives. You will also contribute to efficiency programmes and the development of innovative digital solutions.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in helping water companies meet their performance commitments, drawing on your understanding of operational and asset interventions to support a wide range of activities.
Candidate specification
Essential
- Working knowledge of water and/or wastewater operations
- Demonstrable track record of delivering change and performance improvement within an operational or asset management environment
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical analysis to non-technical audiences (e.g., report writing and presentations)
- Strong teamworking skills, with the ability to motivate others to deliver high-quality outputs
- Ability to influence outcomes and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
- Understanding of the regulatory environment in which UK water companies operate
- Experience in developing and delivering regulatory submissions and associated outputs
Desirable
- Relevant engineering or other technical qualifications
- Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Certificate or Diploma in Asset Management Chartership (or working towards) with a relevant professional institution (e.g., environmental, engineering, or asset management)
- Experience in project delivery, client engagement, and/or consultancy
- Continuous improvement qualification and/or experience (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) and/or project management accreditation
- Commercial awareness, including experience supporting proposal development and fee estimates
